I am struggling with what this woman's surname is. I have her baptism and marriage, yet I am not sure whether the priest is abbreviating her last name or this is the true spelling. (the priest does sometimes abbreviate..for EXAMPLE-- XXmiglia for Vintimiglia) (20 in Italian sounds like Vint) can anyone help with the two records below??
Baptism of Sicilia (Cecilia) ????? daughter of Giuseppe & Catherina
Are the records from Piana degli Albanesi (or nearby)? If so, the surname is probably di Xiori, and that X was pronounced sch or sk (at least it's like that in modern Albanian). Today there is a surname Schirò which is common in the area.
Does it help?
Marco, Milano, Italia
PS I didn't get Piana degli Albanesi from the air ... the name of one of the witnesses seems to be Li Cauli which is common only there.
