At 10 pm on 29 Oct 1870 died Giuseppe Marino, age 3, born and resident in S. Giuseppe Jato, son of Giorgio, age 50, middle class, and Caterina Riela(?), age 36, both residing in S. Giuseppe. (I doubt the mother's surname really was "Riela" but that's what it looks like to me.)

At 10 am on 30 Nov 1870 died Salvatore Marino, age 22, born and resident in S. Giuseppe Jato, son of Giorgio and Caterina Riola, both residing in S. Giuseppe.

In this one the mother's surname name is more distinct. It could be Riola or Priola. Both Priolo and Riolo are normal western Sicilian names, and sometimes they are spelled with an "a" at the end instead of an "o".

I am reading Caterina's surname is "Riela" in both these records.

You are very welcome Debbie :D

As you suggest, hopefully the correct spelling of the surname will be more clear with more research. You might be interested to know, from info in the Italian White Pages, the surname “Riela” does exist today within the 21 km radius (very technical here) of San Giuseppe, Jato. http://www.paginebianche.it/ricerca?qs= ... o+%28PA%29
