Writing letters to potential family members in Italy

I would like to write a letter to people I think might be related that are in Italy.

I would like to know what to write--and how to do it. I would like to ask if they are related and put the names of the great grand parents, their children and the name of one relative known to have never left Italy for America.

Is there any way to do that, and not royally mess it up? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
