Birth Certificate Translation Assistance

Postby cbwolfpack85 » 05 Jul 2016, 19:29

I am new here and want to say thank you so much to all the people who have added information to this site over the years. It has been incredibly helpful.

I've read through many of the articles here as well as the forum topics and responses. Such a wealth of information. This was especially helpful to get me started (http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... earch.html). A huge thank you to the person responsible, if he or she is here.

I'm researching the Battaglino family from Amorosi, BN, Campania. Using all of the resources I've found here, I believe I've been able to find a couple documents related to my great grandfather Paolo. One is his birth certificate, and the other is the birth certificate of what I'm guessing to be his older brother (of the same name) who maybe passed in infancy?

The first document, circa 1881, is here:
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 1.jpg.html

I was able to rewrite and, with some help, translate the birth certificate to the best of my ability:

Original:
Paride Maturi
Bartolomeo Di Chiara
Galietta

Translation:
In the year eighteen hundred eighty one, of the day nineteenth of May
at the hour 9:30 a.m., in the municipal hall
In front of me Andrea Galietta assessor with Mayor function
registrar of Municipality of Amorosi
appeared Pasquale Battaglino, 45 years old, farmer, he is domiciled
in Amorosi, and he has declared that at the hour 7:30 a.m.
on the 17th of the current month, in the house in
Via San Nicola number 4 by his wife Alessandra Franco, farmer, with him cohabitant
is born a baby of male sex, introduced to him, and he gives him the name of
Paolo.
To this action have been present, as witness Paride Maturi,
68 years old, landowner and Bartolomeo Di Chiara, 32 years old, shoemaker, both residing in this Municipality.
This note has been read to all participants, they have signed with me, except the declarer because he is illiterate
Paride Maturi
Bartolomeo Di Chiara
Galietta

But now a relative has presented me with the 2nd document, circa 1867, here: http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

I started to type out the Italian in an attempt to then translate. I apologize for this being a terrible transcription. I'm sure it is:

I really hate to have my first post be a request for translation help, so instead I'll ask if this record follows a "standard" entry style that someone may have so that I can follow it and try to translate myself? Any help is very much appreciated!

I would also like to ask the group if my assumption seems terribly out-of-line that Pascale/Pasquale and Alesandra had a child Paolo in 1867, at some point he passed as a baby/infant/boy and then 14 years after his birth they had another son and named him Paolo? By today's standards that seems odd to me but I can't come up with a better explanation for two parents of the same names, in a very small town, to have two boys by the same first name within 15 years of eachother.

Again, my sincere thanks!

1. you should really invest in a copy of Trafford Cole's book Italian Genealogical Records.
2. if the first name of a child who died was that of a parent or grandparent, or some other important family member, then the first name would be used again at some point, even if it was some 14 or 15 years later.
3. There were too many errors in your transcription to just highlight in red every one of them, so I had to retype the entire transcription. Hope I got it all.

Hello Erudita,

Thank you so much for your effort! I just purchased a copy of Cole's book and look forward to using it. It is helpful to know that the name may be used again.

I truly appreciate your time.

You're very welcome. The book won't be the answer to everything, but I think it's a good resource for someone starting out who truly wants to learn how to decipher and understand these records. When I started this kind of research some 20 years ago, I wasn't aware of its existence and was pretty much on my own.
