Help with birth record: Carmelo Gaetano Vasta

Postby donnalynn829 » 15 Aug 2016, 18:57

Hi.

I'm hoping to get some help with the translation of a birth record for Carmelo Gaetano Vasta.

The original is online here:
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

Knowing the names, ages, dates, locations and occupations would be greatly appreciated. I have American records for him, but after finding the 1894 birth record for his brother (translated by the great people on this forum), I believe Carmelo, who went by "Charles" in America, used a different birth date (for reasons unknown).

Many thanks!

I'm certainly no expert at this and the script is difficult to read, but I'll fill you in on what I think I know. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

This is the birth record of Carmelo Gaetano. Surname Vasta, possibly?
Born on the 3rd day of November 1891, 9:30 am, I think. The comune is Agira.
His father's name was Antonino. I can't read his mother's name.
That's the best I can do…

Steve
There may be a difference between the date of the record (which was the date of the declaration of the birth, and usually the presentation of the infant at the town hall (unless there were extenuating circumstances and the infant was not presented), as was the case in the other document which I translated for Domenico Alessandro. We all have to start somewhere, so don't be afraid to offer your input. These records are a learning experience for all of us and, even I, am still learning.

Thanks to both of you! I don't know Italian, other than the few words I have learned in this genealogy process, so your help is invaluable to me!

I should have known that the 3rd of November was the day the birth was recorded and not the actual date of birth. I don't know how I let that get by me.

Until looking at this record again just now, I was having difficulty reading the term lo scorso in the phrase del dì trenta del lo scorso mese (of the 30th day of last month). And then suddenly it came to me. Still learning…

The handwriting is difficult to read. I would have never been able to guess at the mother's name, although I did see guerra at the end of her surname.
