Consistency Issue - assistance needed

Postby ItalianbellaSA » 16 Aug 2016, 22:10

Hello everyone:

I found in my family tree that I have a Giacoma Caputo, born June 20, 1829 to Lorenzo Caputo di Andrea, age 30, and Martira Pisani di Michele. Address Via Catecomb, #18, Molfetta

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

I also have a Giovanna Caputo who died Jan. 6, 1888 in Molfetta, address also Strada Catecomb, #18, at the age of 59, which would make her birth year 1829! However, in the death record her surname is Caputi. She is the daughter of the late Lorenzo and the late Marta Pisani. She is the widow of Pantaleo de Biag????, wife of Michele Allegretta.

I looked in the birth record indexes for 1828 and 1830 for either a Giovanna Caputo or Caputi and didn't find anything. This was picked up as a consistency issue because the two sisters were born too close to each other. Do you think that the death record should have read Giacoma Caputo instead of Giovanna Caputi or are they totally different people? When I added Giovanna Caputo into my tree I didn't realize that the last name was with an i instead of an o. I really am not sure what I should do? Any advice would be appreciated and I thank you for your time. I hope I explained this clearly, as it is a little confusing.

Both surnames Caputi and Caputo are associated with Molfetta. See this website: http://www.avitrees.com/town_info.jsp?t ... vince=Bari

My guess is that you have two entirely different people here. It's the difference in the given names, not the surnames that leads me to believe this. It's also unlikely they were sisters since it seems they were born in the same year, although the age at death of Giovanna may be inaccurate. And since both surnames exist in Molfetta the differences in surname of these two people is probably correct.

I'm not exactly an expert at reading these records, but that's my take, for what it's worth.

Anyone else care to comment?

I don't agree with Steve... :-)
I think they are the same person; at that time there were no "official" names. Still in XX century, there are a lot of cases of siblings with different surnames, that they took on after "formalization" of surnames themselves.
For instance, members of my family are reported in notarial deeds or civil and parish records, as Moccaldi, Morcaldi, Muccardi, and termination in "i" or "o".

Looking back at the record, there is the common address to both records, which would indicate a relation. If the differences in the spelling of the surnames are as common as Pippo says they are (and he would know better than me), then perhaps this is the same person. I suppose she could have been named Giacoma at birth but have been known as Giovanna to the informant at the time of death.

This raises an interesting question for one of my searches. I have been searching for a Joanna Catalano to no avail, but have found in the indices several individuals with the name Josepha Catalano. Could one of them be the Joanna I'm looking for? That's a rhetorical question. I don't mean to hijack your thread. But now I'm thinking of looking at each of these records to see who the parents are.

Giacoma could not have died in 1888, as she married in 1896. See the notation across the top of the 1829 birth record. She married on Feb 20, 1896 to Giovanni Aiello, son of deceased Gaetano. Record #59. I found the following first and second marriage publications among the allegati for Molfetta on family search.

Here's a link to Giacoma Caputo's 1874 marriage (Aug 29th, no. 136) to Giovannangelo Dragone. Here her surname is Caputo unlike in her marriage publications in 1896 where it is Caputi.

Still no luck in finding Giovanna's birth record

Here's a Giovanna Caputo born Feb 8, 1824 to the correct parents. Unfortunately no marriage notations with this birth record.

I also saw a son named Andrea Caputo in the 1826 index born on Oct 5th. #241 in the index

Giovanna Caputo in the death record did marry Pantaleo Biaso in 1845. I see it in the index below. I'm trying to find the record

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

Here's the marriage record. She was age 21, consistent with the birth year of 1824.

Hi Sue
You're very welcome. BTW, in case you need this info, I also saw that Andrea Caputo married Cecilia Palma on Feb 10, 1848. Not sure I saved the link to that index though.
