Help Translating Marriage Record #13

Postby 32deuce » 17 Aug 2016, 22:54

Hello, and thank you for taking a look! I am hoping someone can help me understand marriage record number 13, Francesco Di Spazio and Venera Letizia.

http://interactive.ancestry.com/1893/31752_221154-01952?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2fsearch%2fdb.aspx%3fdbid%3d1893%26path%3d&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnBrowsing#?imageId=31752_221154-01962

Can someone please tell me what is says, and if the handwritten notes include recognition of children born before the marriage. I am hoping that Rosa Letiza is recognized as the daughter of Francesco in this record.

I am also including a pic of the record if that is easier.

Thank you!

Dated Aug 15, 1878 at 10:30 a.m. in the town hall of Capodrise

Appearing was the groom, Francesco Saverio Di Spazio, age 32, peasant, son of deceased Giuseppe Di Spazio and deceased Rosa Grauso. Also appearing was the bride, Venera Letizia, age 39, daughter of deceased Francesco Venera and deceased Angela Grillo. Marriage publications were on the 21st and 28th of July. The couple exposed, in the front of witnesses, that, from their natural union, two children had been born. The first was of unknown parent born on March 11, 1872 and named Rosa Letizia. The second was born on March 28, 1876 and named Giuseppe Di Spazio. With the present act, they were recognizing these two as their own children and legitimizing them.

One follow up question, the record says "from their natural union, two children had been born" and later "The first was of unknown parent born on March 11, 1872 and named Rosa Letizia."

So was Rosa the biological daughter of Francesco, or was this essentially an adoption?

In Rosa Letizia's 1872 birth record, supposedly the wording was that she was of unknown parent. I don't have access to either that record or the 1876 one. Possibly these are available on ancestry.com, but I don't have a subscription to that. There was no adoption. Also no DNA at the time, so it was the word of the couple getting married that the two children resulted from their natural children. Also it's very possible that the children weren't illegitimate at all, when they were born. Possibly Francesco and Rosa had been married in the church before the two children were born. After the unification of Italy, the civil state did not recognize church marriages and considered children born after a church marriage, but before a civil one, to be illegitimate in the eyes of the civil law. So only a civil marriage could then make those children legal.

You are the BEST! Thank you. That makes perfect sense. Her birth record does not mention a father, so that would explain why it is worded that way. You have been a tremendous help!

I am attaching a copy of the birth record in case anyone wants to see the wording, or has questions at any point in the future. Her birth record is number 29.

The birth record is dated the 11th but it states that Rosa was born on the 8th at 4 a.m. The mother was the one who appeared to present the infant and named her. So the father did not come forward at this point to recognize his child.
