Can someone please translate this handwritten letter?

Postby msavoua1 » 26 Aug 2016, 00:18

Can someone please translate this handwritten letter for me? My great grandmother wrote it in 1941. Thanks in advance.

It is a petition addressed to the Pope, requesting help to get info about her son Francesco, who was a soldier in North Africa with Italian Army, and had not sent news home for several months. Do you need a word-by-word translation ?

Translation is not easy, as there are a lot of old fashioned sentences and words that are hard for me.
By now, I write it down, translate with Google Translate, and try to make some correction:

First page

A Sua Santità Pio XII

To His Holiness Pius XII

You can not imagine what a cruel agony and torment afflicts the heart of a poor, old mother, who for so long has not been able to track down where her beloved son has gone.
More than two months have passed without receiving any news, although several times I have addressed to the competent authorities.
Sometimes I feel like dying, sometimes my faith fails, but hope to be able to find my unknown (she actually uses this word...maybe she meant that the place where he was, was unknown) son revives me and makes me firmly believe in God.

Do you do research in Italy? I'm looking for 3 death notices from Toritto, Bari.

Second page:

Artigliere Savoia Francesco
45° Reggimento Artiglieria
1° gruppo 2a batteria
Posta Militare 263 Cirenaica

Partì dall'Italia 10 mesi or sono.

His Holiness is the only person who can trace my dear Francis and give him back fully, if still alive , to my affection. His address is:

Artillerist Francesco Savoia
45th Artillery Regiment
1st Group 2nd battery
Military Mail 263 Cirenaica

He left Italy 10 months ago.
He arrived in Cyrenaica and was sent to Bardia area.
Several times I received from him from that place, but for some months I live in constant trepidation.
I'm pining for him, and cry, thinking of his bad fate, and in my long sleepless nights, I always see before my eyes his melancholy and sad image.

As to your question, the answer is "yes", I send you a PM.

Third page

I imagine him with a bleeding arm, and a prisoner of the English , beaten , exhausted , distressed .
Your Holiness, only you can soothe my soul by giving me, I am sure , accurate news, on my dear Francesco , sole support of a widow and poor mother .
Accept the prayerthis believer and devoted mother makes, fulfil it and consule her .
I devoutly kiss your hand.

I think it wasn't a perfect translation, but I hope it makes sense...
