second eyes on document

going through a old collection of atti diversi records that i had forgotten about, i found a document with information i had given up for finding...this is exciting!

the record is a challenge to read. this is what i gleaned.
Act # 41 - 1847 4 Mar, 8am Gaeta, Province Terra di Lavora? Recorded 7 Jul 1847, Ariano
3 Mar 1847 10am in the military hospital of Gaeta, Don Michele Purcaro, prisoner, age ----, born in Ariano, property owner, domiciled in Bagno di Gaeta, son of Tommaso, deceased and Orsola Ottavio, deceased.
Giving testimony are Antonio Lista? of Gaeta, age 31, nurse, regnicolo? residing in Gaeta, and Saverio Iannarone, age 42, nurse, regnicolo? residing here.

my questions:
1. is this Gaeta, the same Gaeta, Latino, Lazio
2. Terra is Lavoro? Savero?
3. domiciliato nel Bagno di Gaeta - is there another translation other than in the bathroom of Gaeta?
4. what is the word and its correct spelling - regnicolo?
5. does it give any other pertinent information that i might have missed?

thanks so much

Hi Donna

Re: Bagno: At home we not only used the word Bagno to refer to bath/bathroom/bathe but also to refer to “swim”. I've just looking at some pics for Bagno di Gaeta and it is beautiful and looks like a wonderfull swimming spot. So maybe also it was a seaside village?

thank you very much for the picture and the citations. i look forward to translating them and learning more.

Michele was imprisoned in 1832 after being captured in the Carbonari uprising in the town of Nola with Dom Angelo Peluso. He was jailed in Capua for many years.

I am curious to know under what circumstances political prisoners would be moved. Why & when was he sent to Gaeta after Capua?

I appreciate your information.

Angela,

i grew up with the dialect version of both - i did not know the bagno-swim connection.

you are so right - looks very beautiful and there sits this massive structure of despair. given the beauty and my ancestral connection one more stop to make when i eventually get to visit!

What an amazing pic of the prison. Wow! Beautiful and very interesting.

Donna, I hadn't realised you grew up with dialect as well. Was that Napoletano?

Back to swim: As I recall there were two words we used "Bagno" and (phonetically) "Naadaa". So when saying I/s/he can or I/s/he can't swim the word would be “Naadaa”. Bagno was used more when saying we are going or have been for a swim. (I think I have this right.)

Hi Donna,
In Italian Language the word BAGNO has different meanings http://dizionari.repubblica.it/Italiano ... refresh_ce
, and with a town name, normally the meaning is:facility and services designed to welcome the public bathers, as a well the spa in Gaeta area; in common Language the Bagno is the coastal area of a town near the sea, and because I remember very well abt the other topics on IG forum abt Michele Purcaro and his bad destiny, and his imprisonment in Capua jail, considering that the clerk missed the word "penale" and that I don't have a bad mind, and no one knew that Michele Purcaro was sent in the jail of Gaeta, I thinked that he had been released from prison and went into the sea because of poor health...
jail translation in italian = "Carcere, Prigione, Colonia Penale, Bagno Penale."
Best regards,
suanj

"... è morto nell'Ospedale Militare di Gaeta Don Michele Purcaro, servo di pena .... domiciliato nel Bagno di Gaeta ...".
Wittnesses were infermieri....

It appears that Don Michele died while he was imprisoned (servo di pena) in the Bagno of Gaeta
