I am writing to those Mirra with the same given name as my father or grandfather or great grandfather.

My grandfather, Vincenzo Mirra, was born circa 1889 in San Giorgio, La Montagna.

If you think we may be related I would be very grateful to receive a letter from you.

If we are not related but you know of a Mirra that may be related to me please give this letter to them.

I have enclosed a self addressed envelope.

Hello Chuck.
I'll give it a try. Most of the letter looks fine. A couple of changes.

Sentence 5--change Parente to Mirra.
Sentence 6--end sentence with ....battesimo di mio nonno.
Sentence 8--Mio bisnonno era Giuseppe Mirra. Or possibly Mio bisnonno fu Giuseppe Mirra. Not sure which tense is correct.
Sentence 9--end sentence with ....Montagna il 8 dicembre 1888.

Anyone else out there who can give Chuck a hand??

Biff

Chuck,
Even if you and/or I made a mistake in the letter, you'll still be understood, and your potential relatives will be happy you wrote the letter in Italian, even if it has a mistake or two. Make sure to let us know what you hear back from the Italian Parente's and Mirra's.

Hi Biff, I came home to this e-mail. I think it may be a reply from one of my letters I sent. Could you or some one let me know what it says.

In essence he's started some research in the comune archives and he may be able to help. He has a brother who has lived in Boston since 1967. He would like your fathers name as he thinks he may have the name of your grandfather or relative.

Hi I received additional information from Italy, could someone please translate it for me. :?

Thank you very mych.

saluto Gerardo, Bay Bay.

Hi Chuck,
You have posted two fairly long letters, one after another here and requested that someone translate them for you.

Have you any idea how much work and time would be involved in producing a reasonably acceptable translation of a these two documents?

The two letters contain no less than 515 words - that is 2457 letters without counting the spaces - not a small translation at all!

I'll willingly help out with small requests, and I have done so already for you. But for something of this size and content I just don't have enough spare time from my other 'paid' translation work....sorry.

Maybe someone else will have the time and be willing to help you with what are two very interesting letters.

Dear Last--

I do not speak Italian, but have you tried Babelfish or Google Translator? I tried the first 2 sentences in Google translator. There are 2 misspellings (maybe more) in the first 2 sentences that even I as a non-Italian speaker could spot: "faatto" should be "fatto" and "indaggini" should be "indagini".

The Google translations aren't very good, but I think if you work at it, you can get some sense out of what the person is saying.

Good luck. Peg

Dear Last,

Did you receive the last message you posted as an email? The reason why I'm asking is because it is written in very poor Italian and some of the sentences need to be guessed. Are you looking for a translation into English? I will give it try but please let me know if what you've posted is the original text.

Hi Last,
I gave it a try and I hope my translation will help you finding what you are looking for.
Best,
Angela

Dear Parente C.,
I apologize if I asked for your father’s surname even though I should have known that it would be like yours but sometimes not everything is for certain. I only asked for this information to have completeness of the research. All I can say is that I understand now from which family you descend. Basically, the nephews of your father’s brother, i.e. Filippo, who had two sons named Giuseppe and Pellegrino, who were married with children, live here. Giuseppe’s children (Carolina, Giuseppina and Filippo live not far away from my house, that is Filippo. The daughters live respectively one in the province of Pisa (Toscana) and the other one in the city of Naples. Whereas the two sons of Pellegrino, one also named Filippo, lives in Milan, the other one lives in my city. I don’t know if in addition to me you have also written to others, and even if so, I don’t believe they will respond to you. I, on the contrary, have responded because I do appreciate such researches tremendously. It is very exciting to research the own origins and we should all do so. After all, I am a relative of yours since my grandfather named Domenico was a first cousin of your grandfather Alessandro. You and I are practically third grade cousins or at least this is how the story should be. On the other hand, if you give me a little bit more time I am certain I will be able to find out more. Furthermore, I would like to let you know that I am fifty-seven years old, married with two children and both of them are currently in Boston. But what about you, how old are you? I hope I don’t give the impression of being too curious but it is nice to know a little bit more about the person one is conversing with. Regards, Gerardo, bye-bye.
