My impression from that book I read, La Storia, is that ownership for a contadina involved a small amount of property, like a plot or a field, as opposed to a noble landowner, who would own acres upon acres.
Thanks so much for your thoughful answers, certainly sheds some light....here's a new one though. Along the same vein, I believe this profession is generally also a farmer but can't quite make out the second word, I know the first word means farmer but....Also, can anyone read the cause of death (last line)....I have shown so many people but the handwriting is atrocious. After you sign up for a free account - select browse and select your image, then select host it. It will then upload your image and give you several different selections to choose from for the format you want to use. It will look like your options are all right next to the image, but scroll all the way to the bottom and there will be a selection that says direct link to image. Highlight the direct link image, go to the menu on your main screen window and select edit, then copy. Come back to the forum and start your post for this thread, then paste the link.
