Mayors of Campobasso Italy

Post by Squigy »

Can anyone help me find a list of Mayors of Campobasso Italy, from the years 1830-1900. My great great grandmother, Elisa Grimandi/Grimani, was the daughter and or granddaughter of one of them. So anyway, if I can find a list of names, then I might find her father/grandfather.

Was your GGGM Elisa the wife of Vincenzo Spetrino?

I don't know my GGG Grandmothers name, that's what I'm trying to find out. My GG Grandmothers name was Elisa, and her husbands name is Joseph.

Sorry, I should have made myself clearer. GGGM = Great Great Grandmother. So your GGGM Elisa was married to Giuseppe. I have Elisa Grimaldi (born circa 1845) married to Vincenzo Spetrino in my database --- no Giuseppe. I have never seen the surname Grimandi/Grimani in the Campobasso records. I though perhaps the surname was actually Grimaldi, which does appear in those records. BTW, the website for the comune of Campobasso used to have a list of all Mayors from 1808 but the link is broken. You might want to check on it occasionally to see if it's been fixed. Follow the links Citta > la storia > i sindaci dal 1808.

Thanks. Do you know how long the links been broken? The surname could have been Grimaldi, but she was not married to Vincenzo.

I don't know how long it's been broken. Perhaps you can e-mail the comune at urp@comune.campobasso.it. They may be willing to send you the list.

Vincenzo Grimaldi is listed as Mayor from 1808-1809 and again from 1828-1832. This may be the same man or two different men. In my database I have Vincenzo Grimaldi (c1759-1850), who could have been mayor during both these periods. He was referred to as Don Vincenzo Grimaldi on certain records, a title of respect worthy of a mayor. I also have Vincenzo Grimaldi (c1809-1886), but he seems too young to have been mayor in 1828.

Thanks, this was really helpful. I think Eugenio Grimaldi (the one who was in office from 1846-1853) could have been my GG Grandmother, Elisa's, grandfather. Could you find out when Eugenio was born? That way I could compare his age to hers. By the way, Elisa was born in the year 1889, so the Vincenzo Grimaldi who was born 1759 is too old to be her father/grandfather. I'm guessing he was her ancestor, or at least family member though.

I have one possibility in my database for Eugenio. Eugenio Luigi Grimaldi was born 18 JUN 1808, the son of Vincenzo Grimaldi and Vittoria Presutti. He was first married to Saveria de Luca (c1809-1839) and then to Angelina Sofia Lavinia Emilia de Rubertis (born in the comune of Lucito) on 22 FEB 1840 in CB. Strangely, I don't have any marriage or death records (I haven't canvassed the birth records yet) for children from either of these marriages nor a death record for Eugenio, which usually means the family either moved or emigrated.

Well, I think I might have figured out how Elisa's genealogy runs. Do you think this makes sense:

Sindaco Vincenzo Grimaldi (born 1759 died 1850) served as Mayor 1808-1809

His son was Sindaco Eugenio Grimaldi (born June 18 1808) served 1846-1853

His son, of an unknown name, probably born between 1840 and 1850 was the father of Elisa Grimaldi (My GG Grandmother)

Now here is what my family told me. Elisa's father was rich by inheritance, they said he inherited a lot of castles and buildings. Her grandfather was Mayor of Campobasso, and so was her uncle (Her fathers brother) Now, I'm guessing her uncle was the other Eugenio Grimaldi on the list of Sindaci. The one that was Mayor 1920-1923. Also, I'm fairly sure Elisa's mother was a little younger than her father. You won't find death records for Elisa, because she came to America and married Joseph/Giuseppe.

While that line of descent might be possible, there are any number of other theories equally possible. In order to pin down your actual ancestry, I believe that you will have to find Elisa's birth record. I can look for her birth record circa 1889 when my Family History Center reopens in September. You can also search these records yourself. The Campobasso civil records have been filmed by the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) aka the Mormon Church. To view the film details, go to www.familysearch.org, then Library>LibraryCatalog>PlaceSearch and type in Campobasso. The films can be rented and viewed at the Family History Centers operated by the LDS. You can locate the one nearest you at the above website.

The Grimaldi family of Campobasso were seemingly well-to-do, what with a number of mayors throughout the line. However, they weren't of the nobility of Campobasso. At the time of Vincenzo Grimaldi (c1759-1850), the Romano family held the Barony of Campobasso (1740-1806). Pasquale Romano was Baron when feudalism was abolished in 1806. The Romano line was preceded by Monforte-Gambatesa (1300?-1495), Di Capua (1495-1559), Gonzaga (1559-1638), Vitagliano (1638-1639), and Carafa (1639-1740). Castello Monforte (the only castle in the comune of Campobasso) was the property of the Barony. However, there is a direct connection to nobility within the Grimaldi line. Antonio Grimaldi (c1858-1882), the great grandson of Vincenzo Grimaldi (c1759-1850), married Francesca Saveria Frangipani on 12 FEB 1882 in Campobasso. She was the granddaughter of Duca Francesco Saverio Frangipani of the comune of Mirabello. There are some very interesting possibilities for you to research.

Could you look up the name Jennie/Jenny D'Andrea in your records? I think there are different Italian spellings for Jennie with an IE, and Jenny with a Y, so you might want to look up all of the spellings. You see, Elisa spent most of of her time with her nanny, Florence D'Andrea, and in private schools. Anyway, her nanny lost a child, and the child's name was Jennie/Jenny, so she called Elisa Jennie/Jenny D'Andrea. When Elisa was 15, her nanny, and her nanny's husband decided to move to America, and Elisa went with her. Her father told her if she stayed, she could have whatever she wanted, but she refused and left with the D'Andrea family.

Jennie/Jenny is not an Italian name. It might be an Anglicization of Giovanna or Genesia, but these things vary greatly. Likewise, Florence is not an Italian name. It might be an Anglicization of Fiorenza or Fioridea or Florinda or Floriana, etc. I have no one in my database that matches either name. I have a number of d'Andrea families, including Domenico d'Andrea married to Genesia Santangelo. All of these d'Andrea families originated in towns other than Campobasso, although each has some sort of connection to Campobasso. My advice is to start looking for Elisa Grimaldi. If you find her, then you can see if any of your family stories fit the facts. In my own case, I found that some of them did and some of them didn't.

I stopped by my Family History Center yesterday and asked for Elisa's records. Unfortunately, they did not have Campobasso city records with them. They said I could order them from the Library in Utah, but it will be a week before the center is open again, and another 3 weeks before the records get here. I'm fine waiting if I have to, but I was wondering if they already have the records at your Family History Center. If not or it's too much trouble to go look through the records, or if there is a fee, as I said I'm fine waiting, and will find these myself.

My FHC will reopen next week and I will check the CB birth records circa 1889 for Elisa Grimaldi. I'll let you know if I find anything.
