The town is GROTTOLE in Provincia di Matera Basilicata.

Go to www.tuttitalia.it/basilicata/78-grottole and under Municipio is the address for the Municipal records office to request documents fromthe Ufficio di Stato Civile.

Are you sure this is the town I'm looking for? I have always been told that he was from Northern Italy, he had a fair complexion, blue/gray eyes, and sandy hair.

If you give us the last name, we may be able to trace his town or area of origin.

GROTTELLA is part of a medieval tower on a PUGLIA region Italian ranch which is the way you spelled it but is inthe South inthe same area as Grottole which I previously furnished you. =Peter=

If you go to www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi and put the surname in the upper left you will see that there may be many cities, towns and villages with the GGfathers surname.

Oftimes family oral history will have clues or stories of family lore that furnishes names, feasts, churches, military service, postcards with date and place stamps and photograph which was very popular at the turn of the century. =Peter=
