Regrettably I cannot speak Italian ( I wish I could). I have found that babelfish does a reasonable job of navigating these sites in mostly english

Is it true that most people just call this town Vallo instead of saying the whole name?

It is very likely that local people would refer to the town using the short name Vallo.

Wikipedia has an entry, in English, for Vallo della Lucania: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vallo_della_Lucania

So locals call it that but it is proper for everyone else to say the full name right?

That's correct. In Italy there are two other towns whose name begin with Vallo:

Vallo Torinese, Torino province
Vallo di Nera, Perugia province

and also a small locality called Vallo, which is part of the municipality of Caluso, near Torino.

Im confused about where the accent is in words ending in "ia". Like lucania, nicosia, catania, etc.

For example, is Lucania:

loo-KHAN-ee-ah
or
loo- khan-EE-ah

loo-KHAN-ee-ah

in Nicosia the accent is on the second "i"

In Catania the accent is on the second "a"
