Cemetery names in Napoli

Postby DEMAYO1967 » 07 May 2010, 16:55

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and I am looking for Cemetery names in Napoli, my Great Grandfather was buried in one of them (not sure which one, but I am sure it was in Napoli) he was born in Napoli too, his name was Nicolas De Mayo (at least that is the last name spelling that we have) he moved to Venezuela in the very late 1800's and went back to Italy were he passsed in the early to mid 1900's , I also need to know if anyone can guide me to obtain his birth records (or church registration, if possible)

Thanks
DeMayo

Hello and welcome to this forum.

My main question to you is do you mean Napoli, the province, or Napoli, the city? Naples is a big place and you need to know which it is before you can attempt to get records.

There are some records online for the Naples area at www.familysearchlabs.org. You need to register with a username and password to use the website.

I don't know about cemeteries there, but I will tell you that burials in Italy are different from in the U.S. and other countries. If your ancestor was buried in the early to mid 1900s, it is possible that his remains now sit in a communal grave within the cemetery as, after so many years, it is my understanding that remains are dug up to make room for new burials and then placed in such a grave. Someone on this forum who lives in Italy can explain this practice better than me, I am sure.

Maestra thank you very much, we are not sure if it was the City or the province, we have been looking but no luck so far, the ones that could have told us (my grandfather and father have both passed) so we are very thin on the info we have, I will log into the website you just gave me and hopefully I can shed some light.

Thanks again
