Rocca d'Evandro - Vitale

Post by rayvitale »

Hello my family name is Vitale. My grandfather left Rocca d'Evandro in 1913 at the age of 16 years old.
Our family tree is a bit of a mystery as we never found out who my Grandfather's father was (it looks like we have the maiden name of his mother).
It seems that my grandfather's mother was not married and had 4 boys. I am trying to piece together this mystery and would appreciate any suggestions on how to proceed.
I have researched the Ancestry web site and have found some interesting information such as my grandfather came through New York in 1913 (Ellis Island) and travelled with a fellow by the name of Domenico Delli Colli.

Thank you.

Hi Ray
On one of the Sant'Elia films (death records) I have on loan at the Family History Centre at the beginning of this film are some records for Rocca D'Evandro I've never studied them but I think they will be death records too. The years this film covers for Sant'Elia is 1860-1882 not sure the years for Rocca D'Evandro I'll check what information is on this film a week on Tuesday when I go back to the FHC.
If your father's mother wasnt married when he was born most likely it wont have his fathers name on his birth record and from a similar personal experience trying to trace my G Grandfather it seems that's where it ends there is no way of finding the father's name unless at a later date he acknowledges that he is the father and then this is added to the birth act. But you should be able to trace your father's mother's family.

Check church records, sometimes they just didn't marry civilly until many years later and then the children were legitimized right on the marriage record. Depending on the town the father might be named or not if they didn't have a civil marriage but he might be the one making the declaration.

Hi Ray
The records on the film for Rocco D'Evandro are death records from 1890-1899 and there are quite a number of Vitale surnames listed I have taken photographs of the indexes and also photographed one of the records just to let you see what it was like but I'm having a problem getting imageshack to download the images here when I get that sorted out I'll post you the images of the phototgraphs I have taken. They may not be of any use to you now but perhaps they will mean something to you in the future when you progress with your research.

Hi Ray,

We may be related - my Grandfather Emanuele Vitale came from Rocca d' Evandro. So did my Grandmother's family - The Fuocos.

Emanuele's parents were named Augustino and Justine (nicknamed Elena). I do not know her maiden name. My Grandfather had a sister, Caroline and other siblings that I do not know their names. They were all killed in a bombing of the piazza in WWII.

My Grandfather emigrated to Canada before leaving for Rhode Island where our family is settled. We also have relatives in Lawrence and Methuen, Massachusetts that I am working with to try and trade information. Also we have relatives in France.

So not sure if that helped and again perhaps we are related. You may write me back at SVitale724@aol.com

Best Regards,
Sharon
