Tommaso
Here are two links. One is a list of all towns in Reggio Calabria and another is a list of frazioni or districts. No Oliva.

Hello tommaso :-)

The concentration of "Raiano" cognome in present day Italy is in the area around Naples. There are no Raiano in Calabria Region.

http://gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html

Italian Phone book shows 45 Raiano listed in the Naples area.

Thanks to Valarie's knowledge of great websites...
Here is one where you can search for a name by province with as little as four letters

thanks for all of the suggestions. the only bit of information i have to go on is a 1942 obituary which identifies he was from oliva, reggio di calabria. i am going to try to find him in ellis island. i do have us census information which indicates he came here in the late 1800's and lived in nyc until moving to western penna around 1930.

i did notice that there were no raiano's in calabria. yet another puzzle that will be a challenge.

just to share a hunch. i was able to find a manifest for the greatgrandfather giuseppe raiano who listed his place in italy as alife which by my guessing may have been taken by an american to be oliva - not too far a stretch. there are raiano family in caserta. might be an explanation. might try microfilm from alife to check out my hunch as i know the grandparent-greatgrandparent names . thanks for the help

The town called Olivadi is in the province of Catanzaro.
As far as I know there's no town called Oliva in Calabria.
