I am just starting on doing my italian geneology. My mother is second generation italian. Can anyone give me hints on where to start? I know my grandfather was a Marrucca. (may be spelled differently.) He came from Piano di Sorrento. according to ship manifests I have found, he was born in Sant Agnello. My mother gets upset everytime I ask about him. I think she is afraid of what I may find. any assistance would be great.

Tessa, Yes, that would be the family tree my wife started. All of the information we have is there. The one problem I have run across is the surname. Marrucca does not come up at all in the italian surname search. During the 1930 census the US Government had him down as Marneca. As I said earlier, my mom does not like to talk about him at all. She has 3 brothers and 1 sister. 2 have since passed away, and the third lives in Jersey. Mt aunt doesn't really like to speak about him or my grandmother at all either. Every ti,me I bring it up the emotions start flying. I decided to post here to maybe get a fresh perspective on where I should start/ or go in my search. I really would love to know if we have any relatives left in Italy. I am going to send a letter to the commune and see what information I can dig up. Thanks for the help so far.
