Church in Ferrandina

Postby lcafarel » 13 Aug 2011, 22:08

Hi, all. The birth record for my husband's great grandfather says he was baptized in the parish of Santa Croce. On the website http://www.basilicata.cc/lucania/ferrandina, there are photos for Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria della Croce, but nothing listed as Santa Croce. Is this the same church?

Also, what does "Matrice" mean in this context?

Thanks!

I think it means "Mother Church" of Santa Maria della Croce :-)

Are you sure this wasn't the parish of "Sacre Cuore?"

It's definitely Santa Croce. I'm attaching the image from my husband's ggrandfather's record.

Also, the year is 1854. I believe that every birth I saw in the Atti di Nascite gives Santa Croce as the location of baptism.

The centre of the City is Piazza del Plebiscito, where one can visit the beautiful Santa Maria della Croce Church (1492), with its oriental dome and 16th century wooden statue in its interior.
There are many religious buildings worthy of being visited: the S. Chiara Monastery (XIV century); the S. Francesco (XVII century) and the Cappuccini convents (XVII century), and in the higher part of the City, the beautiful S. Domenico Church.

It’s impossible not to visit the evocative Uggiano Castle, sadly in ruins and abandoned after the terrible seismic tremours of 1453.
Place of interest

The Uggiano Castle (VI-X century); San Francesco Convent (1614); Sant’Antonio Church (1615); Chiesa Madre of Santa Maria della Croce (1492); Santa Chiara Monastic Complex (XIV century); Palazzo Cantorio; San Domenico Monastic Complex (1517); Palazzo Centola; Palazzo Lisanti; Purgatorio Church; Santa Maria dell Consolazione Chapel; Madonna dei Mali Chapel.

The above from this site:

Why not just email the city hall and ask if "Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria della Croce" and "Santa Croce" are the same? :D

I already did email them, but haven't heard back yet. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I thought someone on this list might know.

At this site... there are only 4 churches listed in Ferrandina

1 Purgatorio in Ferrandina (MT)
indirizzo: Rione Purgatorio, 75013 Ferrandina (MT)

2 Sacro Cuore in Ferrandina (MT)
indirizzo: Borgo Macchia, 75013 Ferrandina (MT)

3 S. Giovanni Battista in Ferrandina (MT)
indirizzo: Piazza Paolo VI, 75013 Ferrandina (MT)

4 S. Maria della Croce in Ferrandina (MT)
indirizzo: Via Venita, 2, 75013 Ferrandina (MT)

http://www.parrocchie.it/index.html?CCH ... bella=&id=

You can search by church name and/or by city/town... :-)

the only "Santa Croce" in Ferrandina is the "S. Maria della Croce"

If you enter "Santa Croce" for the church name search, there are none that come up in Matera Province...

Thanks. This is for 1855, but my best guess is that "Santa Croce" is short for Santa Maria della Croce.

I think it's certainly looking that way :D

Good luck.
