Mondasso/Munzatz, Italy

Post by sunbari1 »

Looking for information about my grandfather's place of birth. His WWII Draft Registration lists his birth town as Mondasso, Italy. Oral history told to me by my mother says he came from "a little town outside of Bologna called Munzatz" (not sure of the spelling). Neither town can be found in a Google search. I tried looking on Google Maps near Bologna for any towns whose names might be similar to these two but had no luck. I have read that some Italian towns were destroyed during WWII and never rebuilt, could his be one of them? If so, where would its records be located? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Thank you for your help!!! Yes, Joseph Stambo is my maternal grandfather that I was referring to. The fact that I neglected to mention his name is a testament to your research ability! I examined the records you provided and can confirm they are his records. I never actually knew the correct spelling of his original Italian last name, as I have never seen it in writing, so it was harder to find records for him. I also recently met a cousin who is the great-grandson of my grandfather's sister and he was pointing me to Montazzoli as the town I was looking for so this confirms it. Thanks also for supplying information about his brother Domenico!

A question about his father's name. Are you sure it is "Gennaro"? The name on the image is hard to read exactly what it is. However, my grandfather's christening record from the church he belonged to in the United States indicates that his father's name was "James" which translates into "Giacomo".

In addition, how would I go about tracking down his 3 sisters whose names I don't know? As far as I know, two never left Italy and one emigrated to Argentina. One of the ones that never left Italy married a DeCarlo. Their son Nicholas DeCarlo emigrated to America in 1928 and was living with my grandfather in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1930. BTW, my grandfather's christening record also indicates his mother's name was "Mary" (no maiden name listed) which can be translated to "Maria".
