Searching in Trabia, Sicily

Post by lallen92 »

Where is the best place to start looking in Trabia, Sicily for old records? Predencia Geraci LaBarbera was brought to the US by her son in law, Salvatore LaBarbera in 1897 and I am planning a trip to Sicily to check out where they came from. My great grandparents would have been Vito Francisco LaBarbera and Anna Palma. Is there a courthouse, a church, a cemetery that would be best to start at?

Since many Trabia civil records are on microfilm I suggest you do most of your searching before you go. There appears to have been some loss of records at some point as some of the films were done at the Tribunale. If you don't find your family in the microfilms then your search should begin at the church hoping that the records there are intact. I suggest you write to the priest letting him know when you will be there and ask if you can conduct a search.
You might want to read about cemeteries on my website under Italian Research.

I have researched Trabia From 1820-1910 Births, deaths, marriages, marriage banns, records of citizenship, and documents attached to records from the civil registration office in Trabia (Palermo). Some registries include an index. Text is in Italian.
There are alot of good records available on film most are readable all from Family History Library

If you have some dates I have a few records out right now at the FHL center I will give a look for you.
I would check records here first before you go to Trabia you can get familar with the records before you challenge the churchs and comunes
Also there was a fire at the comune di Trabia and some of there records got destroyed so I would get my info here first before writing for records.
I have Palma's in my family line Giuesppa Adelfio (1863) married (1884) Giuesppa Palma (1862) daughter of Giuesppe Palma and Maria Scaletta
When you start looking at records most of the indexes are at the end of each year so when your looking through the micro films go through the year you looking at go to the end and it will give you the name and index number for the record your looking at
