Bergo, Italy?

Post by lisataddei »

My husband's great-grandfather's naturalizationrecords indicate he was born in Bergo, Italy. Can anyone help me find this town?

Hello and welcome!

If it is actually spelled BERGO on the papers... no town of that name, but these are close...

Bergogno, comune of Casina - province: Reggio Emilia - region: Emilia Romagna
Bergolo, comune of Bergolo - province: Cuneo - region: Piedmont
Bergonzano, comune of Quattro Castella - province: Reggio Emilia - region: Emilia Romagna
Bergoro, comune of Fagnano Olona - province: Varese - region: Lombardy
Bergotto, comune of Berceto - province: Parma - region: Emilia Romagna

IF it is more likely BORGO... then the possibilities are VERY NUMBEROUS :-(
Knowing what REGION or PROVINCE will help to narrow it down :)

Can you find another piece of documentation to verify the place of birth, such as a ship manifest or WWI or WWII registration card?

If we can be of help to find these records let us know...

It's definitely Bergo but on the ship manifest his hometown is listed as Calle Magg---- (Maggion?). Thanks for your help!

There is a small village called Collemaggiore that is part of the municipality of Borgorose (Rieti province). If you post the ship manifest we may be more precise...

Collemaggiore is also a hamlet in the Commune of Greccio, province of Rieti. According to www.paginebianche.it there are 26 phone numbers corresponding to Taddei's in Greccio, so it is a common surname for a small village (about 1500 people). As to "Bergo", I couldn't say. Can we see the document where it is mentioned?

I would definetely say

Castelmaggiore, frazione di Borgorose (Rieti)

Usually people of the same village or surroundings would travel together and with Elia Taddei there are (among the other):
6 Pasquale Meschini from Borgo Collefegato
11 Domenico raineri from Santostefano
23 Francesco Di Pietro from Collefegato
24 Domenico Volpe from S. Stefano
all coming from small villages belonging to the municipality of Borgorose.

Thank you all for your help! Here is a link to the naturalization form:
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=Vi ... pid=228527

Also--on one of the census forms from Philadelphia, Pa, the family is listed but the last name is Tartadia instead of Taddei. Could this just be a mistake made by the census-taker or should I consider the possibility that the name had been shortened? I don't see any other record of Elia using the last name Tartadia.

Census records can be very inaccurate due mainly to the ability (or inability) of the census-taker in understanding foreign accents. This was sometimes compounded by the fact that the persons providing the information were illiterate and not able to write or spell their names.

As far as I know, the name TARTADIA does not exist in present day Italy...
