Need help deciphering name of town on SHIP MANIFEST

Postby LeandraCat » 21 Sep 2012, 17:11

Hi everyone,

I found a ship manifest for a family member on ancestry, here is the link:

http://search.ancestrylibrary.com/iexec ... 4037581093

The town they came from was LERCARA but City of Birth is listed as "CalenraSoby". Any clue as what town this could be?

Thank you!

Hey Julia,

Is this the correct manifest?
Line 23? traveling with line 24

You're right, the last residence appears to be Lercara Friddi
(a comune in the Province of Palermo in Sicily)

But, their birth location appears to be different

Have you found his earlier manifest? The birth location may be clearer.

Hi Valarie,
Yes this is the right one, Line 23 traveling with his wife.

There was an EARLIER manifest??? I didn't see that!

It's hard to read, but it looks like he was in NY 1904 or 1907 to 1911?

I just noticed that! Wow! To me it looks like 1908/1911...I can't believe they traveled back and forth without the kids like that. Their two daughters (that I know of) were born in 1901 and 1902...They came together with some other relatives in 1912.
I found the father with the girls in a 1915 NY manifest...the mother is nowhere to be found!

Hey Valarie and Julia! :-)

Took a look at this manifest for the place of birth...
this may be a stretch, but it looks like Palermo, Sicily (though very sloppy) to me.

Hey T :D !
It sure looks like it could be PalermoSicily
I can't figure out why they didn't just 'ditto' Lercara from the lines above them
