Island Lil Decout

Postby sazzlynn » 02 Apr 2006, 02:04

Hi everyone,
I have a mystery. I have an ancestor, Eitenne Louis Prospere, who was born about 1828 in Italy. He came to Louisiana about 1850 so his name is a french translation. Oral tradition was he came from Island Lil Decout. (Imagine this spoken with a heavy Cajun accent) "Lil" could be "Te" as in Petite and Decout would be pronounced "decoo". Any suggestions for a location in Italy?
Delia

New Information:
My sister dug up her old notes from years ago when she spoke to this man's grandson. He told his grandson he lived in a large stone home in Rome. I'm now thinking it's not an island but a community in Rome.

Just before my sister found this tid-bit, I had done a name search for Prosperi. And the largest concentration of this name is Rome!

Hi Delia,

Have you tried to find his naturalization papers? May not provide town info, but should include province or region info.

Do you have him on census records?

Death certificate? May even provide town of birth
Researching in San Vitaliano, Napoli, Italy & Armento, Potenza, Italy.

Yes, This is his son. Most records list Eitenne's wife as Zelida Ortis. She is of Spanish descent. The census records only list him as a native of Italy.
I have not found his immigration records. Any suggestions on where to start?

Hi just a bit: Lil Decout sure is mistaken and most probable , second the pronounce it could be :
l'île de/des cout...(?) and the pronounce really is Lil de cout (=isle of cout...) obviously in Italy are some town also called Isola della( isle of/l'île de/des..) and are of towns and no really a isles...
also the first name in italian is Stefano Luigi Prosperi/Prospero

Hi.. I am currently trying to find where exactly my xxxxgrandfather etienne prosperi's exact location of descent in Italy. This post came up... I can shed a little light on his immigration. My mother often spoke about our island hopping grandfather from Italy. You will not find any immigration papers because there are none. There is documentation of his arrival however. My mother has it I believe and I may have a copy of it somewhere. He arrived here via ship from the Canary Islands. He basically hopped a ride over. The ship docked in Galveston.

First, keep in mind that the largest concentration is for now, not historically and many names which are more populous in Rome now, do not originate there.

But if you are sure he lived in Rome then searching for other places seems unnecessary.

The neighborhoods of Rome, to which most people refer to when they are from Rome, are easily found online just search neighbourhoods of Rome on google images. I suggest Testaccio could be it.

If however he is not from Rome originally, you need more documents. This sort of "sounds like" genealogical work often leads to researching the wrong persons family (Prosperi is a very common name that arose independently in several parts of Italy).

Also you should find out if he was married before he went to Louisianna because while Prosperi cannot be traced to an origin, "Ortis" the wife's name can be traced with more accuracy. Could be from Rome (anyone can) but the name itself seems to be from the area of Italy around Udine.
(the fact that an Ortis married a Prosperi lends credence to the idea that they met and lived in Rome since the names do not come from overlapping regions of Italy).
Family tree: 1386 members and counting from 1400-2015

TIP: When asking for records from Italy, do NOT ask for an "estratto." ALWAYS ask for a "copia integrale." A photocopy of the original Act will contain more information
