family records from Ireland and Wales

Postby sweetbird » 11 Mar 2009, 20:36

My sister and I have been able to find the Cook County,Illinois death certificates of our great grandparents and also their Cook County marriage license from 1885 as well as the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index listing for her parents from 1858 (McLean County).

So in summary, we have names and birthplaces in Ireland and in Wales. We are wondering how to proceed now. I have done the Ellis Island search for my great grandfather from Derbyshire County, Wales (who we believe entered the US around 1880 -1884) but have found no close match.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Have you tried www.Castlegarden.org? There are about 400 listings for Thomas Hughes with a number of them coming close to his year of birth. Please get back to me when you think you may have found him for his intended destination. =Peter=

Are you sure you aren't getting confused with the place name.
Derby in Derbyshire County is no-where near Wales (by British standards), it is here
>Derby, Derbyshire<

But IN WALES you can find DENBIGH, IN DENBIGHSHIRE and this is pronounced DENBY...
See >Denbigh, Denbighshire<

This is where they are in the UK
>Denbigh - Derby<

There are 33 Thomas Hughes born 1861 listed for Wales and 49 listed for England also born 1861. Go to www.familysearch.org under ancestor search. =Peter=

BTW - Thomas Hughes is a typical Welsh name....

Ancestry.com shows many Thomas Hughes born in Denbighshire in 1861

Yes thank you, it is Denbigshire Co Wales..it was hard to read the writing on the death certificate.
His mother is listed as Mary Roberts and his father was Thomas Hughes (what else !).

These 2 are possibilities. We don't know his destination but he wound up in Chicago working as a carpenter where he married and died and was buried.

What does destination "7328" mean?

If you go to this site

http://www.stevemorse.org/

scroll down to Castle Garden destination codes and you should be able to find the location.

Hope this helps.

7328 is also listed for The United States as well as Hartford Connecticut. I suspect that the 7328 was withdrawn from USA status and assigned to Hartford Connecticut when it was discovered that #357 was assigned to a Hartford (no known State) so as to avoid confusion....=Peter=

How does one search for the naturalization record? What information is needed?

(I have spent time reading other threads and I am impressed with how helpful everyone is! Thank you.)

Go to www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis and click on "learn about US citizenship" and then when the next page comes up click on genealogy. =Peter=
