Italian Hospital New York City

Postby Normandie » 07 Jul 2009, 20:34

I am trying to find out information on the old Italian Hospital. I know it is closed. My Grandmother was a nurse there in early 1900s. I want to know if they had a school for Nursing in early 1900s. Or does any one know of any other early Nursing Schools in the City besides Bellevue. I have been told the Italian Hospital Society might have some information. However I can't get their address or phone number. Thanks for any help. N.

Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabrini_Medical_ Center for The early Italian Hospital. If not what you are seeking then go to google.com and put in title Italian Hospital Society, NYC and click on first entry regarding Cabrini Hospital.

The Italian Hospital Italian Society canbe found at 172 East 71st Street, NY, NY 10021. =Peter=

Thanks for the information. I did write the Italian Hospital Society at that address but never heard back. That's why I was hoping for a phone number or if other locations. There is a address in Yonkers. I never have written that one. I have googled lots of sites on the Italian Hospital and the Italian Hospital Society. I am trying to find out whether the Italian Hospital had a Nursing School or a list of nurses who worked for them in early 1900s. My Grandmother was born in 1892. She probably would have gone to Nursing training at about age 18 years which would have been 1910. She did go to Bellevue Midwife School in 1914. I am trying to find out where she went to Nursing School. I have written back and forth to Bellevue Archives. They seem to have nothing. I have her Nursing pin from Italian Hospital and her midwife diploma from Bellevue. I am trying to get more information on her. So very interested in Nursing Schools of the period 1910-1920 . Also who would know who worked at Italian Hospital and Bellevue in those time periods. N.

Thanks for the advice. As I said I wrote to 71st address. Never found phone number for them. I googled several sites. I am in Ky. I will put name in white pages for New York City. I have been e-mailing Italian Museum in New York City. They told me Cabrini Hospital was closed. They did give me address for Dr.Mignone of Italian Hospital Society in Yonkers. I did write him yesterday. In doing my research I always google what I am looking for. I try to get information and contacts that way. I write letters, send e-mails if there is e-mail address and make phone calls. The methods usually are successful. However, sometimes e-mail comes back stating no longer an address. Also sometimes with phone calls, get answering machine . I always leave message and try to give short message on what I need. However lots of times they never return my calls. I am trying to put together a family history which when finished i am giving to all my relatives. It just takes time and getting advice from people who been doing this for years. I really appreciate your help and suggestions. Thanks. N.

I thought I would write update on my research on my Grandmother and the Italian Hospital. I still have not proved where she graduated from Nursing School. However, I have learned the history of the old Italian Hospital in New York City. They did have a School for Nurses during time my Grandmother would have graduated. Thanks to several other Schools of Nursing I have photos of early schools and have a copy of the Directory from the 1930's that prove my Grandmother was a Registered Nurse in New York. I also proved she was a Midwife and graduated from the Bellevue School for Midwives. I want to express my sincere thanks to the Office of the Professions, Albany, N.Y., The Foundation for Nursing History and The Bellevue Alumni Association for their help. I still hope to learn where my Grandmother graduated from Nursing School. N.
