occupation: Lea. worker?

Post by CowryShells »

Hi!

I am wondering what "Lea. worker" means when it's given as an occupation. I have seen it many times, but here is one example:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... c=14313855
(It is Image #290 in Family Search collection: Massachusetts, State Vital Records, 1841-1920: Births: Births 1919 vol 0136 Peabody-Petersham)

My only guess is that Lea. may be an abbreviation for leather.

Thank you for your input!

I believe you are correct. Alfred's WWI Draft Card, 1920 census and 1930 census show he worked in a leather factory as a fireman on a stationary boiler.

Employer on WWI Draft Card is H. O. Southwick which was located at 145 Lowell St, Peabody.
