1940 Census Aid

Postby vj » 03 Apr 2012, 20:08

1940 Census
As FamilySearch and Ancestry. com add 1940 census images that can be browsed, this may help to narrow down Enumeration Districts (ED)
vj

From Dr Stephen Morse's One Step pages
Unified 1940 Census ED Finder
http://www.stevemorse.org/census/unified.html

EDIT, added
This site lists the instructions to the enumerators - it's a great help in figuring out what information was collected in 1940
from IPUMS-USA

Even better!

FREE 1940 CENSUS

The Steve Morse site will take you directly to the free census images at NARA
My apologies for the edits!

If you know the street address for the 1940 census, the Steve Morse site will take you directly to the FREE census images at NARA for the selected Enumeration District.

Thanks vj for posting. Lot easier to get around the Census. Louisiana is not completed yet, cannot wait till it does.

Hey Mardi :) !
Have you linked to the NARA census images thru the Steve Morse site or accessed NARA directly?
It appears that they have Louisiana on line

Thanks Valerie! I was able to find my great-great grandmother in PA also! One of many to find but it was the first one so far! Happy Searching! :)

I also used google maps today for the cross streets, I knew what street they lived on in 1940 in PA but not the cross streets.
If the street(s) still exist today, this was a good tool me.

Does anyone know where I can get a clear sharp copy of a BLANK 1940 Census. Also what is a good website to look/search the 1940 Census if you don't have a membership to any of the websites...such as Ancestry.com, WorldVitalRecords.com....in other words, something FREE to search. I have a relative that does not have a membership but wants to search for family members.

Thank you and have a good day.
