Postby mcherry » 09 Aug 2006, 00:45

Once more with feeling.....

Okay, this is none Italian but can you get me started L & M? Census/manifest info for: Elizabetham Vasil. Married Joannem Dankulic Feb 14th 1903 at Holy Family Slovak Church in Scranton PA. she arrived through New York. Her parents were Michaelis & Elizabetham Vasil who MAY have come after Elizabetham(The daughter). try to find town of origin. I think I may have a Ceraso question later as well. Thanks for any direction or information. again!! Michael

Thanks for starting the topic...once again.I apologise for any problems this may have caused you.

Since we don't hide anything here at italiangenealogy.com I think I owe you all an explanation....

The post was accidentially moved while trying to fix another post which contained spam. Thankfully no information was lost but cannot be viewed by everyone at this time. I will be reposting all the info at some point today!

There is a lot of info to be reposted from the original thread. If anyone wants to add anything please feel free until I can repost everthing.

Once again Thanks mcherry for your understanding and for your sense of humour.

OK... i want to make sure I understand you...

Elizabeth Vasil - travelled through NY (arrived from place unknown - single) married Joannem Dankulic on Feb 14  1902 in Scranton Pa...

Parents Michaelis and Elizabetham Vasil arrived AFTER their daughter did. (MAYBE) If am understanding Mr. Cherry correctly...

Town of origin required.. manifest.. census... the whole package...

----------------

No date of birth for anyone??

Dankulic.. should be Dankulics ??

And then maybe we can get a new Ceraso question later.. Razz (why not post it anyways .. but not here...)

Isn't that what you meant... possibility that their daughter arrived to the US first... ?? I reworded my message... Embarassed

Anyways.... Rolling Eyes I am not getting the spelling of the town either... it's in Hungary somewhere...

Don't you have any birthdates for us? Can you tell us the names of their children...

Hi Michael!
Since you asked, in general:
- start with what you know for sure (you, parents, etc) working backward
- find all the US Records you can for your family
online you can find military, census, manifests, SSDI and more
most of the online sites are pay, but can be accessed thru a Family
History Center (LDS Church)
- some of these records can reveal locations, relatives, approx dates of
birth, marriages, etc
- with as much info as you can get, you can write for actual documents,
immigration, birth, marriage, SS application, death
- a Family History Center can get you started on overseas records (on
microfilm)
above all - organize & document what you find (esp. where you found it)
and before you start a project - have a plan: who are you researching and
what do you want to know from your research project today -
it's easy to get sidetracked
I'm sure I left a lot out, there are plenty of helpful websites that
can get you started (& books!).
Hope this helps a bit! vj

Very sorry. Found out her father was in U.S. before her. This is correct.
First Name: Elisabeth
Last Name: Vasilj
Ethnicity: Hungarian
Last Place of Residence: Mocar
Date of Arrival: Sep 24, 1901
Age at Arrival: 17y Gender: F Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Friesland
Port of Departure: Antwerp

ellisisland.org/search...805090583&

The marrage certificate has the spell as Vasil without the J at the end.

Her birth year is 1886. Siblings of Elizabeth(am) are Mary, Verna, Bertha, Michael. May not be in birth order. However... wait you guys are to FAST. Below is correct!!! Interesting spelling of Dankulic.
DANKULIC Family
possible 1920 US Census
Jenkins, Luzerne, PA
Westminster Settlement
- DANKOLASH, Jno, 37 (1883), immig 1898 Na 1906,
b in Austria, Slovak, miner - coal mine
- wife Elizabeth, 34 (1886), immig 1902 Na, b in Austria, Slovak
(children all b in PA)
- daughter Elizabeth, 16 (1904)
- son Michael, 10 (1910)
- daughter Mary, 8 (1918)
- daughter Anna, 7 (1913)
- daughter Bertha, 4 (1916)
- daughter Verna, 3 (1917)

Okay so let's do this. Elizabeth(am) Vasil(j) born in 1886 came to the U.S. in 1902. HER parents Michaelis and Elizabetham Vasil also came to the U.S. Can you find them? Any of therir records may confirm or clarify the town of origin....?

The town of interest is... Mocsar...

The info below was from ...

http://genforum.genealogy.com/slovak/messages/3138.html
"Mocsar" was the Magyar version of the name of the village called Moc'arany in Slovak. It's located a mile or 2 southwest of the town of Michalovce in southeastern Slovakia.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Here's a manifest of interest... Razz

Last Name: Vasily

Maybe Elizabeth's brother??

Would be joining his father Mechely Vasilik in Bradsdale, PA

This one has more substance... seems to match up with Elizabeth's manifest.. since the father was already in the USA... but if this is the correct family I am finding.. it shows that Elizabeth's father died sometime between the end of 1906 and Oct. 1907....

All this is just a hunch.. it's up to you to prove it...

Mihaly Vasilik 1906 manifest

First Name: Mihaly
Last Name: Vasilik
Ethnicity: Hungary, Slovak
Last Place of Residence: Tar...a
Date of Arrival: Nov 16, 1906
Age at Arrival: 18y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Batavia
Port of Departure: Hamburg
Manifest Line Number: 0026

I have NO clue what the naming traditions are for Hungarian families.. but does it seem traditional to name their children after the parents??

This census is correct. However I'm not sure if this manifest is the same Elizabeth(Vasil)or Vasily or Vasilj?? Are the birth dates off? may be 2-3 years? What about the 1910 Census? Her parents were Michaelis and Elizabetham Vasil according to family records. ?? Michaelis may have died prior to the 1910 census. But they lived in PA.

In support of the manifest and census is that she is about the correct age, came alone, to New York, and was headed to the Wilkes-Barre area.

Negative is the birth year is off 2-3 and immigration year is off one year. Would you have the SECOND page of this manifest?
