Both of the scenarios that you mentioned are possible. I shall have to do some more digging and write to Italy for information. You have been incredibly helpful. Let me know if you can think of anywhere else that I can try.

Years ago a very elderly aunt mentioned Profirio (or Porfirio), as well as Frank (?) as Luigi's brothers. The 1910 census record you have is correct. Some records say he was born in 1870, some 1871, but I'm going with 1870. His father's name appears as either Nicolombuono or Nicolotano, and sometimes his mother's name is listed as Filomena Schiano or Philomena. I haven't found anything through Ellis Isl...

Hi Linder, Found a 1910 census record of a Luigi who's wife is Bernice. They have 2 children at this time - Nicholas F and Louisa M? Would this be your family? I am looking for info on grandfather Luigi Mazzella, born 11/29/1870 or 71 in Ischia. He emmigrated to the US and died in New York 9/26/1945.
