Looking for ancestors who were in Italy possibly Salerno around 1840 when my GtGt grandfather Peter Lowry (or Italian equivalent) was born. His parents were Augustine same surname and his mother was Margaret maiden name Salerno. All I know is Augustine was a seaman and sometime after Peter was born they left, found details that they had been in Ireland. Peter is in 1901 Scottish census in Glasgow, and noted as Italian Birth but a British Subject. Does anyone know of this family, or can you help me? They were from a fishing village, possibly Salerno according to family, not sure which one or both were the true Italians....Any help welcome. Thanks

If you feel the Lowry is a translated name the only eqwuivalent that comes to mind is a phonetic LAURI and is mere speculation on my part, Usually surnames remain the same but sometime they change. In any event in Italy all family, documents and family history are in the town of origin. So if you wish to explore you can go to www.paginebianche.it and fill in the 1st line with a surname and third line with a town or initials for a province which is SA for salerno as an instance. and then click CERCA for any listing. Gerri ~

Lowry could be an \'Americanized\' version of your family\'s name.

I fould (not too long ago in my search) that in Youngstown OH there was a family named Lowry whose original Italian surname was Lauretano.

You may want to search that variation of Lowry. From what I\'ve run across, most Lauretanos came from the Salerno/Caserta area in Italy.

Good luck!

54 out of a total of 83 currently reside in the four provinces of Campania. The provinces are Salerno, Napoli, Caserta and Avellino. There is no majority in any of the provinces sdo any one of the four may relate should you find that the Lowry/Lauretano is the correct original surname. Peter
