Zangari Family and Lineage

Hey Everyone,

I have been working on my family tree now for 5 years, and have compiled 191 people in my family tree, but that only goes back about 4 or 5 generations. I am looking for the parents of my grandfather, and their ancestors.

The information that I have is as follows:

Frank D Zangari
born January 22, 1878 in Torre Di Ruggerio Italy - Province of Cantanzaro Calabria. Died February 23, 1922 in Northfork, VA, burried in Portsmouth, NH, in a catholic cemetery, next to his wife.

Elizabeth Belcamino
born April 09, 1885 in Torre Di Ruggerio Italy - Province of Cantanzaro Calabria. Died April 1921 in Portsmouth, NH, where she is burried, in a catholic cemetery, next to her husband.


Any help that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!
Not sure which US records you already have.
If this is your grandfather’s passport application from 1921, it lists
his father’s name as Nicholas.

The civil records for Torre Di Ruggiero (CT) Postale 88060, Calabria are avilable onmicorfilm for all all births,marriages and deaths from 1809 to 1910 at your nearest Mormon family history library (www.familysearch.org) which can be rented for about $5.00. This should take you to your GGrandparents's names if not their birth. When viewing the microfilm take along the book Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson and a magnifying glass since the records are handwritten. Copies can be made as well at the library.

If you wish to check for anyone in Torre Di Ruggiero with same last names go to www.paginebianche.it and insert the surname in the first line and Torre Di Ruggiero inthe second line and click CERCA and if you wish to write to these people as potential relatives go to www.,mangeruca.com =Peter=

Hey Everyone! Thank you so much for the overwhelmingly quick replies! It is so much appreciated!

I just went to look at all the links that you all had posted for me, and I wanted to thank everyone, and I wanted to try to answer a few questions that were asked of me...

VJ, by the looks all those links, that was my great grandfather! I found out from my father that my great grandfather had served in the US Armed Forces, and was in the Spanish-American War (April to August 1898), and was a Band Master, or something...I have the ship's manifest listing my great grandfather as a musician, so that fits perfectly with what I know of him so far. Where did you ever find those?!

Thank you also to Peter, for those great links...I only understand a little Italian, so I am having a hard time understanding them, but I am using Babel Fish here and there to get a grasp of what is being said on those sites...I think I get the jist of it...

If anyone else has any more information for me, it would be greatly appreciated! I don't know where you got those images VJ, but I am profoundly greatfull!

Dear VXZZZZZ one of the websites I gave is in English www.,mangeruca.com and self explanatory and the other is a directory www.paginebianche.it in Italian. In that directory put in your surname in the first line and the town name in the second line and click CERCA and anyone with your surname residing in the town will show up by name,address and telephone number. By going to the english wording site mentioned above you can also send any potential relatyives letters in Italian. =Peter=

His parents, Marianna and Dominic Sr., came here from Calabria, Italy, separately. They met here in Portsmouth by way of formal introduction. They had three children while living on the Puddle Dock, then when they could afford to, moved the family to Bridge Street when Mickey was about 9 years old. That house is also gone now, in its place is a parking lot.

His parents both labored long hard days for local cleaners. His mom in the Liberty Bridge Laundry, which was located near the Liberty pole in what is now Prescott Park. She fed clothes through a mangle all week for the flat rate of $9.99, not a penny more. By the time he was 6 years old, Mickey was working, too. He stood in front of the old post office on Pleasant Street daily and peddled the Portsmouth Herald for two cents each, which earned him a 100 percent profit.

WOW VJ! WOW!

That was my cousin "Mickey"! Yeah, I knew he was still alive in Kittery Maine to this day, he lives out on Stevens Street...my dad said he has not talked to Mickey in like 20 years or so...

Great to know who his wife is, that's another great addition to the family tree...

Any chance some one could help me find more info not just on the Zangari side, but on the Belcamino side as well?

I was just curious as to where the name Zaragosa came from? I just asked my dad about that one, and he has no idea, and I have no records that state that name...

Could it be that when my ancestors came over from Italy that the person who was taking their info had not understood them, and therefore written the name down incorrectly, or could it just be the person who entered it into Ancestry.com that made the mistake?

I talked to my dad about this one as well...he said he remembered when his grandfather was awarded this honor...it was back in like 1944 or 1945. He said he was there, and about 5 years old at the time...that is so awesome!

He does not remember much about the family, since he is getting up there in years, and because of a major heart condition that he has, but when I tell him about what everyone here has been helping me to find out, I can tell he is getting choked up and also very appreciative.

I am going to be printing out what I have learned from everyone here, and I am going to be mailing it to him in Florida...he is really excited. Thanks again for all the help...

It's great that we could find some records for you and your dad!
We'll see what we can do for your Belcamino side.
Unless Elizabetta had relatives who may have joined her in the US,
your best bet may be the Italian records that Peter suggested.

The Zaragosa census error was probably a combination of the
census enumerator's handwriting, the ability of the person who was
giving the information to make themselves understood, and the
person who did the transcription ability to decipher the handwriting.

Census records are great for placing folks in a certain place at
a certain time. 'Facts' like names and dates can be off a bit. Dates
especially are dependant on the person's memory (and knowledge)
who was giving the information.
Census records are wonderful as leads to other more reliable information,
such as birth, marriage, military, naturalization and death records.

Question, have you checked Calvary cemetery for Nicola & Maria
Zangari?
Also, a list of Frank & Elizabeth's children may help us locate their
1910 & 1920 census.
