Hello,

My girlfriend is Brazilian, but her ancestors were born in Italy. Now she is looking for the birth certificate of her great-grandfather. Does anybody know where she will able to find it (or a copy)?
The name of her great-grandfather is Frederico Guiseppe Petrato and was (probably) born in 1881 in Venice.
He was the son of Angelo Petrato and Clementina de Melo Petrato, both born in Venice.

Can anybody help us out?

Thank you,

Francisco

P.s. I tried to find the family Petrato in the Italian telephone guide, but only managed to find 3....
The three persons surnamed Petrato are in twoi villages in the province of Bari as you know. There are no others in all of Italy and certainly not in the city of Venice or the province. I suggest that you write a letter to all three Petrato persons in Italy who are probably related to each other and ask them if thry are related to your girlfriend. enclose a self addressed envelope and some money for stamps so they answer you. Since English is a second language in the schools and if you cannot write in Italian simple sentences in english will be OK to use. Peter

Thanks for your tip Peter.

But do you know if there is an archive where we could look for the birth certificate? Maybe at some government authority in Venice?

Thank you once again,

Francisco

You can request documents by writing to the comune and asking for the correct address of their Ufficio di Stato Civile for the city of Venice. Go to www.comuni.it and put in Venezia in the upper right hand side and then click for Venezia and then click for Venmezia when that screen comes up and click where it says alongside e-mail....scrivi al comune. SAsk them for ther address and forms you need. Write in Italian and/or english. Peter
