Looking for De Goldi from Teglio, Sondrio

My great grandfather migrated to Australia at the age of 18 in 1862. <BR>His name was Dominico Degoldi and came from Teglio. <BR>His father\'s name was Phillip (or similar). <BR>Domenic had a brother who migrated to New Zealand at the same time. <BR>If anyone knows of this name existing in Teglio at any time, please let me know. <BR> <BR>regards <BR> <BR>Leo<BR><BR>[ This message was edited by: Leo on 30-09-2002 02:16 ]

something is wrong with the name..It is not correct. I know this instinctively but also there is no record in the Italian surtname dictionary..or anything close. The earliest record for Australia are microfilm of the passenger listes at Newcastle -NSW inwards and outwards lists 1865-1884 in series #C667. These records are held in Canberra and Perth. More information can be hgad by e-mailing www.naa.gov.au and concentrate on obtaining the correct spelling. Teglio is a town in the Province of Soncdrio in Lombardy and there is no recxord for De Goldi or Degoldi in that town. If you go to www.comuni.it and look up Teglio perhaps you may be able to write to somethere and ask for \"sounds like\" name. Peter

Hello Peter, <BR> <BR>Thanks for you reply. <BR> <BR>I know what you mean about the surname. It does not sound right. I assumed for a long time that it had been made up on arrival to look for gold in Australia. Then I found this site: <BR> <BR>http://www.provincia.so.it/cultura/archivistorici/testi/archivi/chiuro/chiou8.htm <BR> <BR>which may mean more to you than me as i don\'t speak Italian and had to rely on a generated translation. <BR> <BR>It appears that Giovanni Maria Degoldi had some type of public office in Sondrio in the 16th century. There is also mention of Manfredino Degoldi in another location on this site. <BR> <BR>There are certainly no Degoldi\'s in the region now. <BR> <BR>regards <BR> <BR>Leo

Peter, <BR> <BR>I don\'t know whether you are aware of the Victorian Public Records Office as a site for genealogical research. <BR> <BR>http://www.tools.prov.vic.gov.au/unassisted1.asp <BR> <BR>provides access to a searchable database of inwards immigration to Victoria from 1852-1889. <BR> <BR>This is where I found the record of my ggfather\'s immigration details albeit mis spelt(?) as \"Di Goldi\". <BR> <BR>I was able to obtain a copy of the papers to do with his naturalization as an Australian citizen from www.naa.gov.au as you suggested. <BR> <BR>I assumed that his town was Teglio rather than Teglio Veneto but I\'m not 100% on this. <BR> <BR>regards <BR> <BR>Leo

The website is interesting in that it involves court determinations about water, levees and repairs in court cases involving Chiuro. De Goldi as Chancellor and Notary presided at the hearings. The name opbviously existed but does not now nor has it been part of any extended recorded family and the surname petered out. However, if you go to www.comuni.it and insert Chiuro in the upper right side and then click Comune di Chiuro there will be a website with reference to a local library without an e-mail address but has a name and you can write to. The Comune site also has a place for you to send an e-mail to the town itself beneath the www so if you wish to obtain any information about the livbrary or perhaps a local historian with whom you may contact I would go that route. who is helping who?? Thanks much for the website as it is very unique and more importantly \"handy\". By the way just to confound things a little. There is a San Giacomo (st. James) di Teglio with the same postal code 23030 as Chiuro which may relate. I do hope you will obtain birth records from the civil records in town but his birth is at the time of unification of Italy and thats when civil records were instituted so perhaps if needs be yoiu can go to the local chuirch in Teglio. (www.paghinebianche.it and insert parrocchia in first line and Teglio in third line and click cerca.) and obtain a baptismal record. Peter
