advice on finding birth and death certificate for stillborn

Mu Uncle had a twin. He was born in 1924 in Queens County, N.Y. Trying to find more information, like where buried. Is it worth sending for death certificate? All I know is was baby boy, date and address where born. Any advice., would be appreciated. n.

There is a NYC death index online at the following website, but I don't believe there are any stillborn infants in that index. I did find an infant who died at 2 hours old, who did not have a first name, listed as a female with the last name of the parents. The stillborn female, no first name, who was born to my great grandparents died in Manhattan but was buried on Hart Island in a potter's field. Information about her death was in a NYC cemetery, Hart Island register, that I found on microfilm. The mother died within a day of the infant and is in the NYC death index and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens. The stillborn infant is not in that index.

I have checked both death indexes listed in Italian Genealogy Group and German Genealogy Group. There is no listing for this baby. The baby 's last name was Dury. I have been told it was a boy. He was born in Elmhurst, N.Y. in 1924 on Dongan St., which is now Dongan Ave. There are relatives buried in Calvary Cemetery and St. John's Cemetery. However, I could not locate a baby with that last name or date. Thanks again for the information. N.

I do not believe stillbirths (and thus deaths) are officially recorded in New York State. This article http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/ny-stillbirth-bill is on point.

If the birth occurred in a hospital setting, there might be records still held by the hospital; however if this was a home birth, there may not be anything other than family history to provide information.

Apparently you may be looking for a "Fetal Death Certificate" ( http://law.justia.com/newyork/codes/pub ... _4161.html ), however I do not know if these were in place in 1924.

Fetal deaths include both spontaneous fetal deaths and induced abortions which are presented separately in this report.

Fetal death is defined by New York State Public Health Law (4160) to be the death prior to the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception; the death is indicated by the fact that after such separation, the fetus does not breathe or show any other evidence of life such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord or definite movement of voluntary muscles. New York State Public Health Law requires the registration of all fetal deaths regardless of the gestation of the fetus.

The Public Health Law limits access to individual Fetal Death records, both Spontaneous Fetal Deaths and Abortions, to the patient.

Thanks so much for additional information. I guess all I can do is send for death certificate and put all information down that I know. It was a home birth. They were twins and only one survived. I am doing my family's history and just wanted to get more information on this twin. All who were involved are now deceased and have been for years. My Mom who would have been sister was only 4 years old and she told me they were twins and the one who died was a boy. She never told me any other details and she been deceased for 10 years. Thanks again for input. I think I just have to send $15 and application for death certificate and see what it brings. N

I finally figured out why this printed 2 times and made two threads. I hit the back button. I have done this many times to go to other threads, but for some reason it printed my message twice. I will never hit back button again. Will just log out and log in again if want to look at other posts. Computers do funny things. N.
