Birth & Social Security questions

First I want to thank this person, Peter, for all the wonderful information that you have given to me. I finally typed in correctly the web page: paginebianche.it (I was typing it wrong, stupid me!).

anyway what I need to know, I have my grandmothers father\'s name, but I do not know her mothers name. I have the place in Italy to send the letter for a copy of her birth certificate, but since I do not know my great grandmothers name to put in, can I still obtain a copy of her birth certificate from Italy?

Also, I do not know my grandfathers mother or fathers name. Can I obtain a copy of his birth certificate from Italy without this info? He did work here in Chicago as a Carptenter. Someone told me I can write to Social Security for a form to fill out, and on this form it should be listed his mother and fathers name. Is this correct? where do i write to. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again. JoJo

Birth & Social Security questions

Regarding the Social Security Information: If your grandfather had a social security number, he would have filled out an SS-5 form. Sometimes the place of birth, spouse and parents names were listed, sometimes not. If you know where he died, get a copy of his death certificate as it usually has the SSN on it. Then request a copy of the original SS-5 applicationfrom Social Security. You can find samples of the request letter on line at different locations. You can also find more information about this form at the SS website. Put \'SS-5 sample form letter\' into google and you\'ll get lots of choices. Also, you can request a copy even if you are unable to get the SSN the cost is just a bit more. Good luck in your sesarch.
Donna
Try going to the city or town clerk\'s office where your father/mother, grandfather/grandmother, were born , married or died. Look up birth records, marriage records, or death certificates of these individuals. They may include referance to your great grandparents names and place of birth. If you don\'t find them there check great uncle/aunts records. Sometimes an older sibling may have the info, where it gets lost with the younger ones. Good luck, John.

The only place to obtain records in Italy usually is the town of origin of the person you are interested in researching. Soimetimes it is easy to find it and othertimes it is difficult. Please let me know what you know or when you get the information. Peter
