Two names, one woman?

The 1930 census lists my grandfather as Thomas L (I think maybe for Ludovico, if I am correct about when and how he came to America and under that name) Tarantelli, and my grandmother as Mary Tarentelli. My mother says no, her name was Nunziatta or "Nancy." I'm at the beginning of my search so I'm not sure what to make of this. What does this mean? How do I determine what her name was? It will obviously be important for the marriage certificate and for my grandfathers birth certificate...and does this mean I will need to get my grandfathers birth certificate changed to match whatever the name is on the italian marriage and birth certificate of his mother?

Census data is notoriously inaccurate. The census taker sometimes didn't undertand the accent of the respondent. The respondent was often illiterate, so could not spell names, places, etc. Memory of dates was often inaccurate as well.

As for the name Mary...could have been an attempt at a "more American" name, or a real misundertanding of Nancy. (I know...sounds like a stretch)

If you can provide us here with names, dates, places where they lived, immigration dates, etc. - we would be happy to help you along on your search. There are skilled volunteers here who can find people's documents when the name doesn't even slightly resemble the actual spelling.

Thank you so much! Yeah, I think they just made that Mary thing up. Very frustrating. But at the same time, interesting - I hope for the sake of many current immigrants that the census takers in 2010 don't just make up more American sounding names!

So here is all the information I have found in the past two days:

Ludovico aka Lodovico aka "Thomas L." Tarantelli, born 1875, came possibly the first time to America in 1899 but I don't find any info. I see him on ships manifest in both March 1904 and March 1907, coming the first time from "Pratola P." Italy and the second from "Pratola Velegan" Italy. On the 1930 census it says he arrived in America in 1905, but on castlegarden.org it says he had made a trip before then, and there is a listing of him after then as well.

Nunziata Tarantelli (or Mary according to the census) was born 1885, DOD 1978, though that seems strange, my mom didn't mention that my great grandmother lived that long. No other information on her. I got the DOD from a website of the cemetary they are buried. I don't know where she is from or her maiden name, so that might be a challenge in getting her birth certificate and their marriage certificates! I did a search of all "Nunziata"s on the ellis island website and came up with a couple possibilities. I just ordered my grandfather Orlando Tarantelli's birth certificate, without her maiden name on it, so I'm hoping if I get that it will give me more information on his mother. Maybe??

Do you have any documentation that lists your GGF name as Ludivico? or Thomas?

I looked at the 1930 Census you referred to above. Your GF is Orlando (17), the second child, right? The other children's names are familiar to you, correct? If yes, then here is an interesting find...

This is a WWI Registration Card for Salvatore Tarantelli. He lives in Geneva, Ont. Cty. He works as a foreman on State Road. His wife's name is Maria. His date of birth is December 27, 1877.

The red highlighted facts MATCH the 1930 census facts...

No, I believe he was born in Cincinati, Ohio. But that's not for sure, my mother doesn't even know that much! She just remembers them making fun of the name "Cincinati" when she was little.

My best guess at Nunziata's surname would be Palombizio.
Currently there are about 85 people with that surname in Pratola Peligna
Hopefully the image will become available on the 1910 death certificate so we can see if Nunziata's surname is a transcription error

If we can't figure out the correct maiden name, any one of her children's Social Security applications (SS-5) will list both parent's names.

It would not have been unusual for her to go by the name Mary. Maria was often part of the given name in Italy (and other countries)

Wow. Okay first, yes that is both the ships manifest (1904 SS Neckar) and the correct 1930 census (it's so cool to see all my families names there).

Second, how in the world did you find all this information?? The words shock and awe come to mind. YOu guys are...amazing. I cannot thank you enough.

I'm not sure about the 1910 census, the ages don't seem to match up, but who knows, nothing else seems to quite match up, right?

How did you come to the conclusion that her last name would probably be Palombizia? Because of it's proximity to Salombezzi? I attempted to order my grandfathers birth certificate without the maiden name - how many "Orlando Joseph Tarantelli's" were born on 5/18/1912 to a "Lodovico tarantelli" in Ohio, right? So if that works, that will give me Nunziata's maiden name. Funny thing about "Mary" is that my mom said she never went by that, she went by Nancy...

Seeing as its pretty likely that a bunch of these documents are going to have errors on them, I'm going to have to go to probate court to get them all changed, aren't I? Yippee! I'm glad I'm starting now!

I'm so glad we could figure out Nunziata's maiden name for you.

and tried some 4 letter combinations (from the name on the death certificate) in the Abruzzi region until Palombizio popped up.

Don't worry about age and date differences on census records - it depeneded up on who talked to the enumerator, what they knew, and whether or not they could make themselves understood.

Yeah I used that information to try and track down their naturalization paperwork. In 1932 my Grandfather would have been 19 or 20 so I think that means he never lost his Italian citizenship and therefore I *should* be eligible for it...
