Trip to Italy - Looking for a tour guide / genealogist

Hi,

Some of my cousins ad I are planning a trip to Italy and we would like to spend some time either researching our family history or visiting sites that are relevant to our family's history. Our family is from the tows of Potenza and Isca Sullo Ionio.

I have a limited amount of information that I can provide (names, approximate birth dates, etc).

I have several questions:
1) What is the best way to find a reputable guide / genealogist?
2) How can I verify that the person is reputable?
3) What the the typical payment terms?
4) What would be an appropriate rate?
5) How would such work be billed?
6) Is it appropriate to provide a "tip" for good work or would it be considered insulting?
7) What would be an appropriate length of time in each area to visit family sites?


Where might be a good "base of operations" to stay to allow visits to both areas? We would also like to spend some time on the Amalfi coast as well.

Ancestry.com recently made a great deal of records for Potenza available online. So, if you're interested in researching your family history, if you give us some names/approx. dates we may be able to help you.

My G-G-Father was John Angiolillio b1854 - d1952 (the name was changed to Angelo when he moved to America)
He was married to Maria Felicia Botanza b. 1859 - d. 1929
He had a brother named Girard Angiollilio b.1856 - d 1902

Their parents were
Frank Angiolillio and Elizabeth Angiolillio

Girard and John immigrated first with their families. They then brought over their parents. They initially settled in the Hazelton, PA area, but they have families in Northumberland County PA. John and Maria Felicia are buried in Marion Heights Cemetery in Marion Heights, PA.

Unfortunately, birth records only go up to 1865. Were they married in Italy? If so, do you know the year?

I'm not sure when or where the were married. I do know that all their children were born in the US. I would estimate that the got married prior to 1890.

Joseph B don't you have relatives in italy in that specific town of ISCA SULLO IONIO All you need is a cousin and you can all go to the beach!!!!
Your not going to the moon your going to a place where your going to see people who look like yhour aunts and uncles.

Telephone directory for ISCA is www.paginebianche.it. Put in family name in left side and Isca sullo ionio on the right side and click CERCA for any relatives with the same last name. =Peter=

There are 44 ANGIOLILLO in the entire province of Potenza so when going to www.paginebianche.it put in PZ for the entire province of Potenza on the right side. There are no Angiolillo in Isca Sullo Ionio.

Of course when you say yhour family comes from Potenza do you mean the CITY of Potenza or did the family come from some town or village in the PROVINCE OF POTENZA??????? =Peter=

I'm not sure when or where the were married. I do know that all their children were born in the US. I would estimate that the got married prior to 1890.

Joseph you started out with questions. Have they all been answered? As for base of operations and travel in Italy (east -west is just a couple of hours sea to sea and going north by train is a few more hours going from South to North (including Sicily so figure 10-12 hours give or take

Have you found any ship's manifests for this family? This may help you narrow down town of origin in Potenza.
