Great grandfather came from Italy in 1800's - We have been told from Palermo and also northern Italy. Very frustrating. Any ideas of where the family name Lieze may be from would be very helpful. We have no record of other spellings.

I searched abt your ancestor and I am sure that your ancestor was Donato "Lieze"; also I found the genealogic tree on ancestry.com..
Obviously Lieze surname not exist in Italy and the fact that I no found Donato in the 1900 census of Pennsylvania and in 1910 census of New Jersey, let me understand that the surname is wrong and maybe just a part...
also the wife(Mary Schefflera ) maiden name is mispelled ... just some thought

Tony... maybe used Tony because the first name was Donatantonio( Donato + Antonio)?
In 1910 the family was in NJ, but I cannot find it in Gloucester Co, NJ and no in all NJ!
The finding of 1900/10 censuses could be very helpfuls, because we can have a better ide of the surname spelling... I see a wedding photo of your ancestor in the genealogic tree.. where they married? Most probably around the 1895 in PA?
If your ancestors was sicilian the surname could be Liggio or Lizzio, but it is hard to say...
If you have more details please give us, maybe we can search better....

Nardone is a surname of southern Italy , also present in Abruzzo and Molise regions as a well Roselli surname....


So my idea is, that was a tradition of to marry in foreign country, with a immigrant coming from same italian region especially, or almost coming from a region very close own birth area:

it is possible that also Donato, as a well Maria the wife, they coming from same birth area of Rocco Medaglia and Ernesto Nardone grandparents?

the Maria maiden name was (by genealogic tree on ancestry.com): Schafflera...

obviously is wrong, but I believe correct: STAFFIERI

now if this my idea is right( maybe I am wrong) well, in this case the Donato surname could be: LIZZI

so my idea is that Donato and Maria was no born in Sicily, but between Abruzzo or Molise or Campania region.... however in southern Italy but not in Sicily...
with the names of:
Donato Lizzi and Maria Staffieri...
