I am doing a search for info about my grandfather. I just received his naturalization papers which list his birthplace as Valle di Cadore. He was born Loui Carli Nov 24, 1898 and his mother's name was Maria. He immigrated to the US in 1919 coming on a ship named S.S. Columbo., at the age of 21. This is all the info we have about him and I would like to know how to go about expanding my search. Denise Bennett

You need to request his birth record from the Comune di Valle di Cadore. There are form letters on line and the address can be obtained from a Google search for Comune di Valle di Cadore.

I found that manifest too. On page 2 Luigi declares that he had been in US in 1919. I couldn't find that 1919 manifest though.

I found that manifest too. On page 2 Luigi declares that he had been in US in 1919. I couldn't find that 1919 manifest though.

I am not so sure that says 1919; looks more like 1913 to me.

But it raises the question - maybe he arrived in the US in 1902 with his mother, returned to Italy in 1913 (or whatever), and then back to the US in 1920.

You are right Carmine, it looks 1913 . On that manifest Luigi also declared he was joining his uncle Rodolfo in Chicago, Ill. If this is the correct Luigi Carli it looks that his uncle Rodolfo Carli was married to Antonia Emilia Da Corte, same family name as Maria, mother to the two children ( Luigi and Vittorio) on that other 1909 ship manifest. Luigi's age doesn't match as he's 7 years old, so born 1901/1902 but often children's ages were wrong. There is also a 1905 ship manifest for Rodolfo and Angelo Carli and other information. Denise, is this Luigi Carli travelling in 1920 the one you are looking for?

Thank you for all the info. I just got back on today and had already found out most of this info. Ada, I do believe that this is my grandfather. And Carmine, yes he did leave and then return. It looks like his father Angelo came to the USA a few years before his wife and two sons, Luigi and Vittorio. After Maria arrived they had a daughter Maria. My Great-Grandfather(Angelo) died and they returned to Italy. I don't know if they all went back to Italy or not. Later my grandfather came back to the USA(Chicago)I think that when he returned he lied about his age:) Not sure, as I now have several dates of birth from 1898 to 1902. His papers also say that he was in the Italian artillery 1917-1919. Which may or may not be true. This has been quite an experience. It's just sad that my uncles and my grandmother are no longer living to see this! On the other hand, my mother is overjoyed to hear all about her father and his family. Thank you all so much for your help!!!!

Can you tell me where you got Rodolfo Carli's wife's name. I can't find it on any of the manifest that I have.
I was also thinking both Angelgo's and Rodolfo's last name was Carli. Both Maria's and Emilia's last name was Da Conte. Would that mean that two brothers married sisters?

For what it is worth, such things did happen. My parents first met at the 1938 wedding of my father's elder brother and my mother's eldest sister. They married six years later, in 1944.

Thus, brothers sometimes did marry sisters.

if you type Rodolfo Carli, you will get, Rodolfo ship manifest for his arrival on Apr 5, 1905. Rodolfo seems to be joining a Da Corte in Kensisngton, Ill. (sorry I cannot post the manifest)

You can see that Rodolfo's wife is once Antonia Emily, then only Antonia then only Emily but I believe she's the same person: Antonia Emilia Da Corte. By the way the family name is DA CORTE not Da Conte but I assume transcribers could easily mispell.
I think I found more when I searched, probably Antonia's ship manifest. I'll have to see but I'm having some problems with my laptop today (the screen keeps on getting dark. Time for a new one?). May be other members can give a hand while I'm trying to see if I can fix it. Sorry
