I'm hoping for some guidance in my search.
My last known Italian born ancestors came from Miglierina, Catanzaro, Calabria. In the 1850's ( during construction of Suez) they moved to Egypt and stayed there until the 1950's.
My grandfather, Antonio Astorino, was born in Egypt in 1890, and was conscripted from there by the Italian Government for service in the First World War circa 1914-15.
He was wounded in the battles at Gorizia (Isonzo River) in either very late 1915 or in 1916.
He returned to his family in Egypt after discharge.
I have attempted to obtain proof of his Italian ancestry via the state records in Miglierina, and while they have overseas registrations for several of his daughters they have no records for him or my mother, blaming a fire in a registry for the loss of certain records.
I believe this is the case, because I speak Italian and telephoned a very helpful archivist in Miglierina who conducted a search and located several of my aunts' registrations and explained this to me.
I'm hoping to go through the back door and see if anything will turn up in his Military records. But where do I begin? In Miglierina again, or is there a central Military Registry? Italy must hold some records, else how did they know where to conscript him from?
Any advice gratefully received.
