This has GOT to be his!!! Wow! This is so cool! I want to cry with all of this information. I had no idea joining this group would lead to s many successes! I feel so grateful to all of you! You're all so amazing! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I am only 28 and I really miss my family heritage, stories, etc and I am trying to get everything together before its too late. My great-grandfathers son, Johnny is the only one still alive and I want to give him all of this information. And of course, bring it to Sicily with me when I go to see what else I can find. My family has never been able to afford to go back to Sicily and I am the first generation that has had "upward mobility" to be able to do it.

I'm baffled.

I just emailed the clerk to find out how to request records. Thanks!

Thanks for this! I've never seen Donald in anything. I wonder if this is my Uncle Danny (perhaps his real name was Donald?) He was the youngest, so that makes sense. He died at age 37, from what I hear. Thats really interesting. I'll have to ask my uncle john (the 4 year old on this list) if that was his real name.

Does anyone know if there is a way to figure out where my great grandparents lived, went to school, church and worked?

I know that Michele Cordaro worked in the sulfur mines in Caltanissetta at some point before coming to the US, but any way of figuring out which one and what dates? What about other employment? He must have been a child when he worked the mines. I think he left school after 2nd grade--and is illiterate.

And I have no idea about the history of my great grandmother Giovanna, but I do know that she was literate and apparently really smart. She learned to teletype in the US (maybe before?).

They were catholic (though thats no big surprise) and went to church in Caltanissetta...no idea where or which one.

Any advice on how to go about figuring this stuff out would be great. I'd love to go visit some of these places when I go to Caltanissetta in June.

Thanks!

Oops, let me clarify... I would like to know these things about Sicily, not the US.

So I did a lot of research today (I've been on the computer since yesterday non-stop, ha). I was able to update my records for the Cordaro line and share a lot with my family. Would there be a way to continue to go back generations past my great grandparents? Or are the records in Caltanissetta impossible to access? Do you think I would I be able to access them once I got there?

My great-grandfather Michele Cordaro's parents would have been:
Salvator Cordaro (approx. DOB 1845)
Michelina Bruno (no info on her, sorry)

My great-grandmother Giovanna Lomonico's parents would have been:
Angelo Lomonaco (Approx. DOB 1864)
Guiseppa Asarisi

Any ideas would be great.

Jen
Probably the best (and easiest) way to research your family is to use the films available from FamilySearch
They have Church records on microfilm going back to 1539 and Civil Records back to 1820
To find out about your family's life in Caltanissetta, finding relatives or people in Caltanissetta who knew your family may be the best way. The first page of your post should have a guide for finding relatives.

The cost is about $6 mo (rent), you’ll need to go to the center to order & view them.

Thank you so much for this! I am not familiar with any of it. I've never done genealogical research before. I am hoping to learn from this and be able to help others with theirs--you've all inspired me.

Thanks again! I have my work cut out for me. =D
