Jen C. wrote:My step-mom sent me a copy of the names and addresses in my great grandmother's (Giovanna Lomonaco) bible. I'm a little confused about it since the names in the bible all have the same last name but it is not a last name that I have found in our lineage. Any ideas how these people might be related? I'm thinking maybe it was her sister or someone that got married and took a different last name? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Maybe the clue is in the bible...but I can't read it other than take an educated guess since I don't speak Italian. Here is what it says:

Registro di famiglia

Nome, cognome, luogo e data di nascita del marito:
Antonetta virga
address in Hemet, CA

Nome, cognome, luogo e data di nascita della moglie:
Mario Virga
same address in Hemet, CA

Sposati:
il Signore mario virga 1924 dal antonetta virga nella in chiesa della madornsa (sp??) di pompei NY bhige st. (sp?)

Nascite:
antonetta Virga
nata dicembre 8 1903
nata agubbellina provicia trapani

Nascite:
Mario Virga nato a polizze generoso provincia gia palermo nato 1897 novembre 27--

Any help with this would be amazing!
Thanks everyone.

I also think that Antonetta Virga nata dicembre 8 1903 is nati in Gibellina, Trapani Province, Sicily instead of nata agubbellina provicia trapani

Thanks Marty! I'm going to start working on more research this week. I've been out of it in the last few days because of severe allergies--haven't been feeling too well.

I'll be sure to keep everyone updated on info!

San Joseph instead of Caltanissetta?

Where did your great grandfather die?

It is possible that this is not your Michele Cordaro
Both living on Jay Street
Perhaps cousins?

FYI: After doing some research, this is what I've come up with. San Joseph translates into San Guiseppe and is a town not terribly far from Caltanissetta (about 75km away) But this is still not my family. I just thought it was interesting. Michele Cordaro did serve in WWI according to his son (my uncle) as a potato peeler/cook because he couldn't speak English read or write.

As I was going back through this, I noticed this sentence, which I missed before. What do you mean, it looks like he had been in the US before? As if he had made two trips back and forth? Thanks for the clarification.

On page 2 of the arrival manifest for Angelo Cordaro, he states that he had been in US before in 1906 :-)

Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you all know that I'm back from my trip to Caltanissetta. It was more rewarding that I ever would have imagined, Thanks to all of you. I was able to go to the state archives and pull the original books that all these records were originally written in. I got to touch them, smell them, copy them, etc. Through these records I was also able to locate the streets that my family members were born on, died on, etc. It was amazing to walk the same path as my ancestors. I took tons of pictures and even was able to find my cousins!!!! They own a bakery in Caltanissetta and were able to tell me more about my family roots. The older generation remembers that my great grandfather use to send money from the US to them, thats how they started the bakery! I'm going to keep in touch with them and they even want to come out here to California from Sicily to visit and meet the family! This has been an amazing experience, thank you all.

For Christmas I'm going to put all of the documents and pictures/stories into a presentation for my family. I'm planning on making a book to give to all of them of our family history. I really appreciate it--without you, I wouldn't have been so successful.

Warmly,
Jen

I really can't express how fundamental you all were in my search. There are no words to describe how I feel. I'm going to keep at this genealogy thing. =)
