Great-Grandfather's ancestral town

My brother and I are trying to locate my great-grandfather's birth and/or baptismal records back in the town he came from in Italy. He is no longer living, and was born there in the late 1880s. We have never been there or personally know of any existing/living family members. Where do we begin if we only have the approximate year of birth and the name of the town. Any direction or assistance on how to proceed is appreciated.

First go to www.familysearch.org and see if they have microfilmed the records. If they don't have the year you need write to the town in Italian.

If we need to write to the town in Italian, does it get addressed to the town hall of records? the mayor's office? what government office do we contact or write to there? Thank you.

Ann's suggestion above is a great one. You can do the search yourselves, and maybe find some relatives along the way

How did it go? Im in the same boat, my Great grandparents are from Pentone and I located the registry on LDS site but you really need to be able to read Italian , and the quality of the micro films was terrible. So frustrating.

Do not despair!

While looking at these records focus on the names... You should be able to recognize the surnames you are seeking. Then save them on a flashdrive to upload here to the forum. We have many wonderful volunteers who will gladly translate the records for you.

@Kmerdandy -did you locate by going to the site online or by going in person to one of the LDS locations to view the microfilms? I tried from home, but I believe I must personally visit one of the LDS locations in my local area.I have not had time to yet physically drive to a local LDS facility. @Tessa78-Would I need to have the local site order the microfilm/registry in advance of my coming in?

How did it go looking online? I tried to look at the records from that site for a few of my relatives who were also from Catanzaro (Palermiti). When I looked at that town, it kept saying there was no image. Think I might have to fax or email the town.

The images for Catanzaro must be viewed at the Family History Center for now.

I went to the LDS center in NYC, you had to first order the micro film. I thought the films were terrible but on the same token the readers might have been poor quality. I may try again. The last name is Merante witch is like Smith in this town so it was hard for me to find him.
