Need information regarding - Josephine Serio

I was given a memorial card for Giuseppa “Josephine” Serio.
Her death is dated May 6, 1935. The card is printed in English.
I “think” this means she died in the USA. I don’t know
exactly when she was born. I believe it was either late 1914
or 1915 in Sciara, Sicily. I can’t find her arrival through Ellis
Island. The reason could be because she came just a few years
before her death. Unfortunately, the card doesn’t include the
funeral home name or city, state.

Josephine’s father Salvatore Serio (b: 1877 Sciara, Sicily)
came to the USA Feb 17 1921. He was a shoemaker. Per the 1921 manifest,
he had been to the USA in 1907. (Can’t find a record of this 1907 trip.) Salvatore
states he is to stay with his sister Caterina Coniglio, who is living at 6203 Wentworth,
Brooklyn, NY. Caterina’s husband was Antonino Coniglio. I have the Coniglio family’s
1930 NY Census, which includes their children Michele, Rosa, and James.

Found a 1940 NY Census that may be Salvatore -
1940 NY Census– Pettit Avenue, Hempstead, Long Island, Nassau County, NY
Salvatore, wife Marie – on Relief – under citizen info
is listed PA – does this mean a petition for citizenship was
submitted by Salvatore?

Is there any way to find out when Josephine arrived in the USA,
and where she and her father are buried?

On the ship manifest you referenced above, Salvatore's wife's name is listed as IGNAZIA RANDAZZO (in Sciara)

The notation in the column states that Ignazia married Salvatore Serio on 8 October 1914 in Sciara

Record #9, dated 29 March 1868 at 4 PM in Sciara
Father is Giuseppe Randazzo, son of deceased Matteo; age 32, laborer
Mother is Anna Costiglia, daughter of deceased Nicolò; age 25, farmer
Child was born at 2 PM on the same day, and was given the name Ignazia Randazzo.

I have these birth records for both of Josephine's parents, but was told years ago that the information in the margin was just indicating that banns were issued, not that a marriage ever took place. Was this information wrong? I guess the only way to know for sure will be to request a copy of the marriage records from Sciara.

As I stated, Ignazia never came to the USA. She died in Sciara.

As I stated, Ignazia never came to the USA. She died in Sciara.

As you probably know, the records from Sciara seem to end with 1910 (both online and at the LDS Family History Center.) So I think you should request the marriage, Giuseppa's birth record, and Ignazia's death record.

If Giuseppa died in Sciara, it will probably be noted on her birth record. the fact that the memorial card was in English does NOT assure that the death occurred in the USA. My thoughts are that they were printed for the relatives in the USA, and that is why you don't find a local funeral home, etc. on the card.
FYI - I found a January 19, 1934, short entry in The Long-Islander Newspaper, dateline Smithtown, LI, stating "Miss Josephine Serio, who has been quite ill in the Southside Hospital, is improving."

While I know I have to contact Sicily to completely rule it out, I would not be surprised to find out Giuseppa and her father Salvatore both did died in the USA. It's just a bit odd to me for them to be given English written memorial cards. The family continued to receive correspondence from Sciara written in Sicilian (marriage, communion, and death cards) well into the 1980s. But hey - after reading the many queries people post searching for family info anything is possible!
