Here is what appears to be a US Passport Application that Salvatore applied for at the US Embassy in Rome, Italy the month before he returned to the US (manifest you found for Oct 1901)
The application is dated September 1901
Salvatore lists his place of birth as Novara di Sicilia, on 2 February 1851
He sailed on the SS Caledonia from Naples on 14 May 1891, and has resided for 10 years in MINNESOTA.
He was naturalized in the Aitkin County District Court in Minnesota on 27 April 1900.
He is a farmer.
He left the US on 5 June 1901 on the SS Citta di Torino, arriving Naples. He has resided in Novara until June 1901, and is now returning to the US.
