Galati or Galati Mamertino?

Postby Josie07M11 » 09 Jun 2013, 01:09

Hi everybody I'm having some trouble in my research finding the birth record for my ancestor Ignazio Stagno. He was born on the 6 June 1893 in Galati, Messina and died on 12 August 1943 in Giardini (now Giardini-Naxos, ME). I visited his grave there and know that those are indeed the dates he born and died, and also received verification from the comune of Giardini that he was indeed born in Galati.

I've searched through hundreds of pages of the familysearch section for Galati Mamertino, thinking that this is the place where I would find Galati records. He's not listed in the 1893 births for Galati Mamertino and as far as I can tell there are no other Stagno's in the surrounding years.

On the antenati website, Galati and Galati Mamertino are separated. Does this mean these places are different? And I won't find records for my ancestor until familysearch puts up their Galati records?

Thanks!

There is a Galati Marina two hours from Galati Mermetina, both in Messina Province. I think the former is closer to Giardini.

Registri dello stato civile di Galati Marina (Messina), 1820-1910
Authors Galati Marina (Messina). Ufficio dello stato civile (Main Author)
Galati Inferiore (Messina). Ufficio dello stato civile (Added Author)

Matrimoni 1877, 1908-1910 FHL INTL Film 1797557 Item 3

It says in the library catalog that this is filmed with Gazzi, in Messina, but I don't see that online.

Also I just found that Galati Marina is a frazione of the town of Messina itself. Maybe you should look at the town of Messina records online.

Hi Marty I didn't get a copy of his death record, only these three pages which I believe are the only records they have of Ignazio Stagno at Giardini:

Thanks Erudita, perhaps I should order the films for Galati Marina then. I wish there was some history about whether 'Galati' was absorbed into Galati Mamertino or Marina. I'll keep looking though :) Thanks.

Eureka! I found it, Josie. The town of Galati, one of the so-called villages of the town of Messina. The record is on familysearch.org- Date of birth- June 8, 1893 (Happy Birthday, that's still today where I live!)

If the link doesn't work, go to Italy, Messina, Messina, ...ation (Comune), 1866-1910

Whoa thank you so much! That is crazy that you found it. Thank you!!! I wonder why they just pull together all those villages of messina. I guess that's the "suburbs" of Messina? Strange. Thank you again!

Josie

It seems that the town of Messina has 68 of these so called "villages." The "villagi" are not alphabetized by name within the year 1893 either, so finding the record wasn't an easy task. Just glad I found it and that you don't have to rent microfilm.

Thank you for taking the time to delve through all those records for me. I've been looking through them myself and it's incredibly frustrating and tedious to have to search for the records from a specific town. But I guess we should just be grateful that they're scanned and available to us at all! :)
