Surnames: Giansoldati, Soldati, Bosani

Hello, I\'m starting a family tree for the first time. I\'m looking for information on relatives on my father\'s side. I have limited information. (My Dad, his siblings, and parents are deceased). His name was Edgar Andrew Soldati when he died but I remember a birth certificate when I was younger of his reading: Edgar Romeo Giansoldati. My grandfather I believe shortened the surname to Soldati when he went into the painting business in Gt. Barrington, Massachusetts sometime around 1920. My grandparents came from Italy, possibly Speria ??? to the United States before 1913 but I can\'t locate them on the Ellis Island website. Her name was Angelina. Her maiden name was Bosani. I kow Viola is another surname that are cousins of my father.
Any help is most appreciated. My e-mail is: LoriBethSullivan@aol.com Thank you!

since there are several names and there entry into the USA may be in a place other than NYC, why don\'t you file form 81 with NARA.(natioinal archives). Go to www,genealogylookups.com/narchives.htm for the form 81 passenger arrivals record. If they passed on after 1963 you can look up their vitals in the social security death iondex as well. Please get back to me . Peter

Thank you Peter for the information. I went to the website and requested a form 81. I\'ll let you know the outcome. Hopefully by then I\'ll be able to find out what part of Italy my grandparents came from. Unfortuntly, they passed on a couple of years before I was born in 1962. My dad was in the SS Death Index because he passed on in 1967. Thanks again for your help! I really appreciate it. Lori

Peter,
I think I\'m getting closer. I\'ve narrowed it down to Bologna, Italy which is near Spezia the Emilia-Romagna Region in Northern Italy. Plus I found out which cemetary my grandparents are buried, not to far from my home. Planning on going there this week-end. This way I can verify their first names and spellings. Thanks again....Lori
since there is only one Luca Bosani in all of Emilia Romagna perhaps if you go to www.paginebianche.it and locate the address and telephone number you can contact that person and ask her if she is related to your grandmother.. By the way, is there a Sante or a prospero in the family that came into the USA?? Peter

There are 2 persons surnamed Giansoldati in La Spezia, Liguria region and not emilia romagna. Please consider contacting these two persons in La Spezia as well since a letter in italian or very simple english along with an enclosed envelope and a dollar may yield results. Peter timber

I found my grandparents birthdates, middle intital, and date of deceased at their gravesite. It reads: Edgar G. Soldati 1890-1961 and Angelina J. Bosani 1884-1961. I also received my form 81 from the national archives today. The only thing I\'m not sure of is what port of entry, name of vessel they arrived in. I can approx. the date of entry only before 1913 because my aunt was the oldest and that\'s when she was born. According to the form, that\'s the information they need to do the search. I\'m also not sure what it means by indexes and unindexed passenger lists. Also, I\'m going to try to contact the people in Italy to see if they are related. Thank you for looking that up for me.
Lori

Just leave the part of the indexes out but I would use the NY as port of entry since that is the most used port of entry ...go with the numbers. Chances are once they come across name and date of birth even an approximate year will do for NARA. Good Luck. Peter

I found out more information in the past week. I located my grandparents by going to the NARA facility near my home town. They were listed with spellings totally off including the first letter with a F instead of a G. Plus Bosani was off except for the first letter. This is totally understandable with the language difference and all the people coming into Ellis Island. By reading the original manifast I was able to see it was them also by the writing being clear enough on their destination box. I knew the name of a relative\'s last name they listed and the town they went to. I also found out three more relatives came with them that I didn\'t know before. They were grouped together. One of them being my great-grandmother whom I didn\'t know even came to the United States at the age of 62. Now I can add another name to my surname list and try to trace her maiden name: Josephine Teggi, but I\'m not sure if that\'s the correct spelling. I obtained that last name off the death certificate of my grandmother but they had her name spelled different and listed as a male. Any info is always appreciated. My new e-mail: lb12562@yahoo.com Thank you. Lori
