I am going through the microfilm of a small town in Calabria called Caccuri and I am trying to better understand the exact details of the marriage procedures. I will use the marriage of Giuseppe Loria and Filomena Iaconis as an example.
For this couple, Giuseppe and Filomena, I have found the following documents:
1. I have found the solenne promessa di matrimonio. I understand that this is the first step in the process. This record is dated 23 March 1862. According to my Family Tree Maker software, this was a Sunday.
2. I have found a notificazione. I understand that this was the marriage bann. This record is dated 28 April 1862. This would be a Monday. I thought the notificazione were always on Sundays. This surprised me a little.
3. And I found a record called the Estratto dei registri dei matrimoni. I do not understand what it is. This record is dated 9 May 1862. Is that the date of the civil marriage? In the right margin is written the date 11 May 1862. Is that the date of the church marriage? This confuses me. I knew that after the unification of Italy in 1865 there were two marriages, one by the church and one by the government. I did not think that this was happening in 1862.
I have pasted the Estratto dei registri dei matrimoni below. Can anyone tell me exactly when Giuseppe and Filomena got married? And, while I have your attention, can anyone tell me what the handwriting says after it says that Costanza Manfreda was defunta?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
