Torchia and Mazza from Soveria Mannilli

saluto fellow genealogist! I have been searching for ancestors of my great grandparents Giuseppe Torchia b. 5 Feb 1873 Calabria Soveria Mannilli Italy and Giuseppina Mazza b. 12 Mar 1884 in the same place. Giuseppe came to USA in 1903 from Naples with his older brother on the S.S. Trave. In 1904 he went back to Soveria and married Giuseppina on 27 Oct 1904, then brought his wife and 2 small children Busillio age 1 yr and Maria age 2mo back to USA. I know of only one cousin who stayed in Soveria, GIOVANNI PROVENZO, that is whom I search for now. Since he stayed in Soveria he has been impossible to locate. Where shall I begin my search for this ancestor of mine? Grazie, S. Torchia

There are two SOVERIA towns in the province of Catanzaro but neither have anyh Provenzo as residents. There are 14 Provenzo in Calabria, however, and it might be worthwhile to look them up and see if perhap[s you can idenify one of them as your long lost relative. Go to www.paginebiuanche.it and put in Provenzo in the first line and Calabria in the third line. Peter

The 14 persons in Calabria are Provenza not Provenzo. Is it possible there is a mispelling of the last name? Peter

Peter, The document I have is a request by Giovanni Provenzo, born 14 Jan 1928 in Cortale (south of Nicastro), to the archives in Lamezia Terme, requesting the birth record for his reported cousin, Giuseppe Maria Torchia [b 5 Feb 1873] in Soveria Manelli. Giovanni may or may not have been an actual cousin of my grandfather ... he may have written that so that they would release the record. Then again, he may actually be a cousin. I would think that he was sending for birth record for an elderly friend/aquaintance/relative so they could apply for their Social Security benefits. Susan
